Description
Coatings - Concentrated Sulfuric Acid Resistant Low Viscosity Novolac Epoxy System
KEMKO 161 CSA Coat – Concentrated Sulfuric Acid Resistant, Low Viscosity Novolac Epoxy Coating
KEMKO 161 is a high-performance epoxy coating system engineered for applications requiring chemical resistance, especially against concentrated sulfuric acid. It is suited for both protective and structural applications across industrial environments.
KEMKO 161 is a multifunctional “thru system” material, meaning it can serve as:
· Primer
· Body Coat
· Binder for trowel-down aggregate
· Receiving Coat for broadcast systems
· Grout Coat
· Top Coat
This makes it versatile for single or full-system build-ups on concrete and steel surfaces.
Common application areas include:
· Crude oil storage tanks
· Food processing and semi-conductor manufacturing facilities
· Internal linings of tanks and pipes
· Mining, milling, and petrochemical industries
· Pulp and paper plants, wastewater facilities, and power generation stations
· Secondary containment systems and structural steel protection
· Mix Ratio: 2:1 (by volume), 100:39 (by weight)
· Application Methods: Brush, roller, squeegee, trowel, or two-component spray
· Surface Prep: CSP 2 to CSP 4 per ICRI 310.2R; concrete must be ≥250 psi direct tension strength; steel to SSPC-SP 5/NACE No. 1 white metal blast standard
· Recoat Window: 6–32 hours at 73°F (23°C), shortened at higher temperatures
· Pot Life (200g mix): ~40 minutes
· Tack-Free Time: 6 hours; Hard Dry: 16 hours
· Substrate Temp. Range: Minimum 50°F (10°C); Maximum service temp. should not exceed 20°F below Heat Deflection Temp (115°F)
· Full Cure Consideration: Based on ambient conditions and service demands
Coverage and Thickness:
· Standard Coating Build (3 coats): 8–10 mils (0.2–0.25 mm) per coat
· Total Build for Broadcast System: 86–94 mils (2.2–2.4 mm)
· Coverage Rate per Coat: 160–200 sq. ft./gal
· Aggregate Extension: Up to 2:1 sand to resin for patching, yielding ~500 in³ per gallon of mixed material
· UV Resistance: Not UV stable; surface may chalk with prolonged sunlight exposure, though performance is unaffected
· Chemical Resistance: Rated Excellent (E) against sulfuric acid (up to 98%), hydrochloric acid, nitric acid (10%), various organic acids, solvents like gasoline, diesel, and alcohols (limited) – see full chart on page 4 of TDS
· VOC Content: 100% solids, solvent-free, zero VOC formulation
· Packaging: Available in 3, 15, and 150-gallon kits
· Shelf Life: Minimum 3 years unopened, stored at 50–90°F (10–32°C)
· Safety Notes: Part B (hardener) is a serious health hazard – use adequate PPE and ventilation. Follow SDS guidelines strictly.
