Description

Polyprime® 172 is a single-component, liquid-applied, aromatic polyurethane polyurea primer. This primer provides excellent intercoat adhesion. Polyprime® 172SC is designed for use in Southern California to be in compliance with SCAQMD air quality standards.

Material Use

Polyprime 172 / 172SC – Single Component, Aromatic Polyurethane Polyurea Primer.

Polyprime 172 is designed as a polyurethane intercoat primer, specifically formulated to improve adhesion between substrate and topcoat systems in waterproofing and pedestrian deck applications. Polyprime 172SC is a low-VOC variant for compliance with Southern California Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) standards.

System Components

This primer is typically used as part of a coating system where it precedes the application of base and top coats, such as polyurethane or polyurea membranes. It enhances bonding between the concrete or prepared substrate and the subsequent liquid-applied coating layers. The exact base or top coats are not specified but must be compatible polyurethane or polyurea products.

Applications

·       Used as a primer for pedestrian traffic coatings.

·       Ideal for concrete and similar porous substrates to promote adhesion.

·       Especially suitable for environments requiring fast curing and compliance with VOC regulations (use 172SC version in Southern California).

Application Details

·       Application Method: Applied via airless sprayer, brush, or phenolic resin core roller.

·       Coverage: Approximately 1 gallon per 300 square feet (0.14 l/m²).

·       Dry Film Thickness: 4 ± 1 mils (100 ± 25 microns) per coat.

·       Tack-Free Time: 1–2 hours at 75°F (24°C) and 50% relative humidity.

·       Surface Temperature Requirements: Must be >50°F (10°C) and at least 5°F (3°C) above the dew point during application.

·       Cure Sensitivity: Highly sensitive to temperature and humidity – higher values speed up curing, while lower values slow it down.

·       Recoating Window: The coating should be applied within 2 hours of the primer becoming tack-free.

Special Notes

·       Not UV stable; must be top-coated with a UV-resistant membrane if exposed to sunlight.

·       Must not be diluted under any circumstance.

·       Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from contaminants.

·       Opened containers should be used promptly due to moisture sensitivity.

·       Equipment cleanup must be done immediately using environmentally safe solvents as per local regulations.

·       Packaging options include 1-gallon cans, 5-gallon pails, and 55-gallon drums (net fill 50 gallons).

·       Shelf life is 1 year in unopened containers stored between 60–95°F (15–35°C).
