A two component, high-solids, red tinted, translucent epoxy primer. It has been specifically formulated to perform as a moisture-tolerant and adhesion promoting primer.
- Easy to use, 2:1 p.b.v. ratio.
- Moisture tolerant up to 6% p.b.w.
- Excellent penetration and adhesion.
Material Use:
Sika MT Primer is a two-component, high-solids, red-tinted epoxy primer developed for use as a moisture-tolerant and adhesion-promoting primer. It is applied on both dry and damp concrete substrates and is typically used beneath Sikalastic® and selected Sika® waterproofing membranes. It is also used to prevent outgassing before applying Sikagard® coatings and as an optional adhesion promoter in waterproofing systems.
System Components:
- Primer: Sika® MT Primer
- Compatible Top Coats: Sikalastic® membranes, Sikagard® epoxy and polyurethane coatings
- Recommended intermediate system layer when concrete moisture exceeds 6%: Sikafloor®-81 EpoCem®CA (horizontal surfaces) and Sikagard®-75 EpoCem®CA (walls/overhead)
Applications:
- Suitable for priming damp concrete substrates (≤ 6% moisture content)
- Used on substrates to reduce outgassing before epoxy or polyurethane coatings
- Enhances adhesion for waterproofing systems on both decks and walls
Application Details:
- Application thickness:
- One coat (8–10 mils wet film) for substrates <5% moisture
- Two coats (total 16–20 mils) for substrates between 5–6% moisture
- Coverage: 4–5 m²/L (160–200 ft²/US gal) at 8–10 mils wet thickness
- Application temperature: 10°C to 30°C (50°F to 86°F)
- Relative humidity during application must be ≤ 85%
- Substrate temperature must be 3°C (5.5°F) above dew point
- Pot life varies by temperature:
- 50 minutes at 10°C
- 25 minutes at 20°C
- 15 minutes at 30°C
- Recoat time (before applying a second primer layer or coatings):
- At 10°C: 24 hrs min / 3 days max
- At 20°C: 12 hrs min / 2 days max
- At 30°C: 8 hrs min / 1 day max
- Curing times:
- Foot traffic: 6–24 hrs
- Light traffic: 2–6 days
- Full cure: 5–10 days, depending on temperature
Special Notes:
- Concrete must be mechanically prepared to ICRI CSP 3–4 for decks or CSP 1–3 for walls
- Concrete strength: ≥ 25 MPa compressive, ≥ 1.5 MPa tensile
- Do not apply if ambient or substrate temperatures are rising or if vapor drive is suspected
- Do not thin or hand mix the material
- Store between 4°C and 32°C (40°F and 90°F); pre-condition to 18–24°C (65–75°F) before use
- Clean tools with Sika® Epoxy Cleaner before material hardens
- Not suitable for exterior slabs on grade in freeze/thaw conditions
- Freshly applied material must be protected from damp, condensation, and water for at least 72 hours
