Description
M1V is a 4 mm thick reflective insulation consisting of a layer of air bubbles laminated between a metallized polyethylene sheet and a white polyethylene sheet.
Material Use:
SOPRA-FOIL M1M and M1V are high-performance reflective insulation vapour barriers designed to enhance thermal performance in building envelopes. These materials are used to reduce radiant heat transfer and act as vapour barriers in wall, ceiling, and floor assemblies. SOPRA-FOIL M1M features a metallized polyethylene finish on both sides, while SOPRA-FOIL M1V has a metallized finish on one side and a white polyethylene finish on the other, allowing for specific placement depending on the application.
System Components:
SOPRA-FOIL M1M and M1V are standalone insulation systems composed of a single layer of air bubbles laminated between two polyethylene sheets. They do not require additional insulation layers but must be installed with appropriate accessories such as spacer strips or furring strips to create an air gap, and sealed with compatible adhesive tape or sealant to ensure vapour barrier integrity.
Applications:
These reflective insulation materials are suitable for use in residential, commercial, and industrial construction. SOPRA-FOIL M1M is ideal for wall and ceiling applications where a double-sided reflective surface is beneficial. SOPRA-FOIL M1V is suitable for similar applications and can also be used under concrete slabs, provided the white side is facing upward. Both products are effective in reducing heat transfer and controlling moisture when installed on the warm side of the building envelope.
Application Details:
Installation involves fastening the material to the structure using staples, nails, double-sided tape, or construction adhesive. To maximize thermal performance, an air gap of 1.25 cm to 5 cm (0.5 in to 2 in) must be maintained between the reflective surface and the adjacent material using furring or spacer strips. All seams and penetrations must be sealed to prevent air and moisture infiltration. For under-slab applications with SOPRA-FOIL M1V, the material should be extended 150 to 200 mm (6 to 8 in) up the wall and overlapped at joints, which must be sealed.
Special Notes:
- SOPRA-FOIL M1M must not be used under concrete slabs.
- SOPRA-FOIL M1V is suitable for under-slab use with the white side facing up.
- These materials must not be installed in conjunction with other vapour barriers to avoid condensation issues.
- Always install on the warm side of the assembly.
- Service temperature range is from -45 °C to 82 °C (-50 °F to 180 °F).
- The materials are non-conductive, do not promote fungal or bacterial growth, and exhibit excellent fire performance with low flame spread and smoke development ratings.
- Reflectivity is rated at 0.93 and emittance at 0.069, ensuring high thermal reflectance.
- Rolls must be stored upright in a dry, heated area to prevent condensation.
- Thickness is 0.48 mm (3/16 in), and standard roll dimensions are 1.22 m x 38.1 m (48 in x 125 ft). Other sizes are available upon request.
These materials are ideal for energy-efficient construction systems where radiant heat control and vapour management are critical.
