Material Use:

SOPRA-XPS 35 DC is a rigid thermal insulation board made of extruded polystyrene (XPS) with closed-cell foam structure. It is primarily used as thermal insulation in protected-membrane roofing systems (inverted roofs), where it provides high compressive strength, moisture resistance, and long-term thermal performance. The product is designed to enhance drainage and reduce the risk of floating panels due to ponding water.

System Components:

SOPRA-XPS 35 DC is typically used as part of a protected-membrane roofing system. It is installed above the waterproofing membrane and below the ballast layer (such as pavers, gravel, or vegetated substrate). The system may also include drainage panels beneath the insulation to facilitate water flow. SOPRA-XPS 35 DC is compatible with adhesives suitable for extruded polystyrene if temporary bonding is required between layers.

Applications:

This insulation board is ideal for use in inverted (PMR) roofing systems, particularly in commercial and industrial flat roof assemblies. It is suitable for use in areas where thermal insulation must be combined with effective drainage and resistance to moisture and mechanical loads. The product is also compliant with various building codes and certifications, including CAN/ULC S701.1 Type 4 and ASTM C578 Type IV.

Application Details:

SOPRA-XPS 35 DC is installed loose-laid directly over the waterproofing membrane, with the grooved side facing down to facilitate drainage. When multiple layers are required, they should be installed with staggered joints without adhesion between layers. The insulation must be covered with ballast immediately after installation to prevent heat buildup and UV degradation. The maximum service temperature is 75 °C (167 °F), and the product should not be exposed to UV rays for more than 60 days. Boards are available in standard dimensions of 2438 mm x 610 mm (8 ft x 2 ft) and in thicknesses of 38 mm (1.5 in), 51 mm (2 in), 76 mm (3 in), and 102 mm (4 in). Custom sizes are available upon request.

Special Notes:

- SOPRA-XPS 35 DC has a compressive strength of 241 kPa (35 psi), making it suitable for high-load applications.

- The product has a low water absorption rate (0.1% to 0.7% by volume) and excellent dimensional stability.

- It is GREENGUARD GOLD certified and compliant with CDPH V1.2 for low VOC emissions.

- The insulation contains pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content, contributing to sustainable building practices.

- Flame spread rating is <500, and the product has a limiting oxygen index of 24%.

- SOPRA-XPS 35 DC must be stored flat, protected from UV exposure, and kept away from open flames and high heat sources.

- The grooved drainage pattern on one face of the board is essential for proper water management and must be installed facing the substrate.

This material is not UV stable and must be protected from sunlight exposure beyond 60 days. It is not a liquid-applied product and does not have a pot life or curing time. Coverage is based on board dimensions and thickness, with each 8 ft x 2 ft board covering 16 square feet.
