Description

Heat-welded vapor barrier composed of a non-woven polyester reinforcement and SBS modified bitumen.

Material Use:

SOPRALENE 180 SP 3.5 is a high-performance SBS-modified bitumen membrane designed primarily for use as a vapour barrier in roofing systems. It is suitable for both new construction and renovation projects where a durable, heat-welded waterproofing layer is required.

System Components:

This membrane is composed of a blend of SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modified bitumen reinforced with a non-woven polyester mat. The top surface is sanded to provide grip and compatibility with subsequent layers, while the underside is coated with a thermofusible plastic film that facilitates heat-welded installation. SOPRALENE 180 SP 3.5 is typically used in multi-layer roofing systems and can be paired with compatible SOPREMA base and cap sheets to form a complete waterproofing assembly.

Applications:

SOPRALENE 180 SP 3.5 is used as a vapour barrier in roofing assemblies, particularly in systems requiring high mechanical strength and flexibility. It is suitable for use under insulation layers or as part of a multi-ply SBS-modified bitumen roofing system. It is ideal for commercial, industrial, and institutional flat roof applications.

Application Details:

Installation is performed by heat-welding the membrane using a propane torch. The membrane must be applied to a clean, dry, and properly prepared substrate. The selvedge edge (75 mm wide) is designed to ensure proper overlap and sealing between adjacent rolls. The membrane thickness is 3.5 mm (138 mils), and it weighs approximately 4.2 kg/m² (0.86 lb/ft²). The product is supplied in rolls measuring 10.2 m x 1 m (33.5 ft x 3.3 ft).

Special Notes:

- Temperature & Environmental Limits: The membrane maintains flexibility down to -18 °C (0 °F) and has a compound stability up to 121 °C (250 °F). It should be installed in dry weather conditions and on surfaces free of moisture or frost.

- UV Resistance: SOPRALENE 180 SP 3.5 is not UV-stable and must be covered with a UV-resistant cap sheet or protective layer if exposed to sunlight.

- Storage: Rolls must be stored upright with the selvedge side on top. If stored outdoors, they must be protected with an opaque cover to prevent UV degradation and moisture infiltration.

- Water Vapour Transmission: The membrane has a very low water vapour transmission rate (< 2.5 ng/Pa•s•m² or < 0.04 perm), making it highly effective as a vapour barrier.

- Mechanical Properties: The membrane exhibits excellent tensile strength and elongation properties, with peak load values of up to 22/17 kN/m (126/97 lbf/in) at -18 °C and elongation at peak load up to 60%.

- Compatibility: SOPRALENE 180 SP 3.5 is compatible with other SOPREMA SBS-modified bitumen membranes and should be used in conjunction with SOPREMA base and cap sheets for a complete system. It is not a standalone waterproofing solution for exposed applications.

This product is a key component in SOPREMA’s SBS-modified bitumen roofing systems and should be installed by trained professionals following SOPREMA’s guidelines and local building codes.
