Material Use:
SOPRAPLY BASE 520 is a high-performance SBS-modified bitumen base sheet membrane designed for use in multi-layer roofing systems. It serves as the base ply in a torch-applied waterproofing system, providing foundational waterproofing and reinforcement for roofing assemblies.
System Components:
SOPRAPLY BASE 520 is typically used as part of a multi-layer SBS-modified bitumen roofing system. It is installed as the base sheet and is designed to be heat-welded to the substrate or to a compatible vapor barrier or insulation layer. A compatible cap sheet, such as SOPRALENE or SOPRALAST, is applied over SOPRAPLY BASE 520 to complete the system. Both the top and bottom surfaces of SOPRAPLY BASE 520 are covered with a thermofusible plastic film, allowing for efficient torch-welding during installation.
Applications:
This material is intended for use in roofing applications, particularly in commercial and industrial flat or low-slope roofs. It is suitable for new construction and re-roofing projects where a durable, torch-applied SBS-modified bitumen system is required.
Application Details:
SOPRAPLY BASE 520 is installed using a propane torch in a heat-welded application. The membrane is unrolled and heated with the torch to melt the thermofusible film, allowing it to bond securely to the substrate or underlying layer. The membrane includes a 75 mm (3 in) selvedge edge to ensure proper overlap and sealing between adjacent rolls. The product must be stored upright with the selvedge side on top and protected from UV exposure and weather if stored outdoors.
Special Notes:
- Thickness: Minimum thickness before heat conditioning is 2.5 mm (98 mils), and 1.8 mm (70 mils) after heat conditioning.
- Temperature Limits: The membrane maintains flexibility down to -27 °C (-17 °F) and has compound stability up to 121 °C (250 °F).
- UV Resistance: SOPRAPLY BASE 520 is not UV-stable and must be covered with a UV-resistant cap sheet.
- Installation Conditions: Installation should be performed in dry conditions with ambient temperatures above the minimum flexibility threshold. Avoid installation during rain or high humidity.
- Reinforcement: The membrane is reinforced with a composite mat, providing excellent dimensional stability (±0.2%) and resistance to puncture.
- Coverage: Each roll measures 10 m x 1 m (33 ft x 3.3 ft), covering approximately 33 square feet per roll, not accounting for overlaps.
- Compatibility: SOPRAPLY BASE 520 is compatible with other SOPREMA SBS-modified bitumen membranes and should be used with SOPREMA-approved primers and cap sheets for optimal performance.
