Description
SBS polymer-modified bitumen-based air/vapor barrier membranes with glass mat reinforcement.
UNITS PER SKID: 30
Material Use:
SOPRASEAL 60 and SOPRASEAL 60 FF are high-performance SBS-modified bitumen membranes designed for use as air and vapour barriers in wall assemblies. These membranes provide superior waterproofing and air-sealing capabilities, making them ideal for use in commercial and residential construction where control of air and moisture infiltration is critical.
System Components:
The SOPRASEAL 60 and SOPRASEAL 60 FF membranes are part of a system that includes the ELASTOCOL 500 primer, which is required for proper adhesion to the substrate. The membranes themselves are reinforced with a glass mat and feature either a sanded or thermofusible plastic film top surface. The underface is also covered with a thermofusible plastic film to facilitate heat-welded installation.
Applications:
These membranes are suitable for use on a variety of substrates including masonry, concrete, and exterior gypsum board (with glass mat reinforcement and paper-free surfaces). They are typically used in wall assemblies to provide a continuous air and vapour barrier layer, contributing to the overall energy efficiency and durability of the building envelope.
Application Details:
Installation of SOPRASEAL 60 and 60 FF is performed using a torch-applied heat-welding method. The use of ELASTOCOL 500 primer is mandatory to ensure proper adhesion. All membrane overlaps must be a minimum of 50 mm (2 inches), and edges should be sealed with a rounded trowel and blowtorch. The membranes are self-sealing around fasteners, which enhances their performance in wall assemblies with mechanical attachments. For masonry and concrete walls, a standard rectangular torching motion is recommended, while for exterior gypsum, a more controlled technique is advised to prevent blistering by directing the flame only to the top of the roll.
Special Notes:
- Primer Requirement: ELASTOCOL 500 must be used prior to membrane installation.
- Installation Temperature: Can be applied in temperatures as low as -35 °C (-31 °F), making it suitable for cold-weather applications.
- UV Resistance: These membranes are not UV-stable and must be covered or protected from prolonged UV exposure.
- Thickness: The membrane has a nominal thickness of 2.7 mm (106 mils).
- Roll Dimensions and Coverage: SOPRASEAL 60 is available in 10 m x 0.91 m (32.8 ft x 3 ft) rolls with a net coverage of 8.6 m² (92.5 ft²). SOPRASEAL 60 FF is available in 10 m x 1 m (32.8 ft x 3.3 ft) rolls with a net coverage of 9.5 m² (102.3 ft²).
- Pot Life / Curing Time: Not applicable as this is a torch-applied membrane.
- Storage: Rolls must be stored upright with the selvedge side on top. If stored outdoors, they must be protected with an opaque cover.
- Performance Characteristics: The membrane exhibits excellent cold flexibility (-30 °C), high plastic flow resistance (115 °C), and superior air and vapour barrier properties with air permeance < 0.001 L/s•m² and water vapour permeance < 2.5 ng/Pa•s•m².
SOPRASEAL 60 and 60 FF are robust, torch-applied air/vapour barrier membranes that, when used with ELASTOCOL 500 primer, form a reliable system for wall waterproofing and air sealing in a wide range of environmental conditions.
