Description

SOPRASPHALTE OX TYPE III is an oxidized bitumen, in bag.

UNITS PER SKID: 50

Material Use:

SOPRASPHALTE OX TYPE III is an oxidized bitumen used as a hot-applied adhesive for roofing applications. It is specifically designed for adhering waterproofing membranes, recovery boards, and insulation boards in roofing systems with slopes ranging from 1% to 25%, in accordance with CSA A123.4 standards. This material is not intended for use as a cap sheet adhesive and should not be used with extruded or expanded polystyrene insulation.

System Components:

SOPRASPHALTE OX TYPE III is used in conjunction with SBS-modified base sheet membranes (e.g., SOPRABASE), oxidized bitumen membranes (e.g., SOPRAGLASS 100, SOPRA IV, SOPRA VI), and organic felts (e.g., SOPRAFELT). Compatible recovery boards include SOPRAFIBRE 1C (fiberboard), SOPRABOARD (asphaltic board), XPRESS BOARD HD (composite panel), SOPRAROCK MD PLUS (mineral insulation board), and gypsum board. It is also compatible with polyisocyanurate insulation boards such as SOPRA-ISO and SOPRA-ISO PLUS, and mineral insulation boards like SOPRAROCK DD PLUS. It must not be used with extruded or expanded polystyrene boards.

Applications:

This product is applied by mop in hot liquid form to adhere base sheet membranes, recovery boards, and insulation boards in roofing systems. It is suitable for use in both new construction and re-roofing applications where hot-applied bitumen is specified.

Application Details:

SOPRASPHALTE OX TYPE III is mop-applied at a rate of 1.0 to 1.5 kg/m² (20 to 25 lb/100 ft²), which corresponds to an approximate thickness of 1.2 mm (45 wet mils). During application, the bitumen must be heated to a temperature of 220–230 °C (425–450 °F) when contacting SBS base sheet membranes, recovery boards, or mineral insulation boards. For polyisocyanurate insulation boards, the bitumen temperature must be 10 °C (50 °F) below the Equiviscous Temperature (EVT). At ambient temperatures below 15 °C (59 °F), no more than 1 m (3 ft) of bitumen should be spread ahead of the roll to prevent premature cooling; at temperatures above 15 °C (59 °F), up to 3 m (9 ft) is acceptable.

Special Notes:

- SOPRASPHALTE OX TYPE III must never be heated above 260 °C (500 °F) to avoid product degradation.

- The product must be kept in continuous motion while heating in the kettle.

- It is not UV stable and must be protected by a cap sheet or other UV-resistant layer.

- The product is supplied in bag form and has a specific gravity of 1.03 g/ml.

- Flash point is 260 °C (500 °F), and softening point ranges from 90 °C to 98 °C.

- The product has excellent solubility (99%) in trichloroethylene and passes TEV requirements for both mopping and mechanical applications.

- Storage must be in a dry, protected area away from open flames and welding sparks.

- This material is not suitable for adhering cap sheets and should only be used with compatible base sheets and insulation boards as specified.

This material is a key component in hot-applied roofing systems and should be used in accordance with SOPREMA’s installation guidelines and safety recommendations.
