Description

SOPRASPHALTE OX TYPE II is an oxidized bitumen, in bulk.

In cubic meters.

Material Use:

SOPRASPHALTE OX TYPE II is an oxidized bitumen used primarily as a hot-applied adhesive for roofing applications. It is designed to adhere waterproofing membranes, recovery boards, and insulation boards in low-slope roofing systems (1–2% slope) in accordance with CSA A123.4 standards. This material is not intended for use as a cap sheet adhesive and should only be used with compatible base sheet membranes and substrates.

System Components:

SOPRASPHALTE OX TYPE II is used in conjunction with SBS-modified base sheet membranes (e.g., SOPRABASE), oxidized bitumen membranes (e.g., SOPRAGLASS 100, SOPRA IV, SOPRA VI), and organic felts (e.g., SOPRAFELT). It is also compatible with various recovery and insulation boards such as SOPRAFIBRE 1C (fiberboard), SOPRABOARD (asphaltic board), XPRESS BOARD HD (composite panel), SOPRAROCK MD PLUS (mineral insulation board), SOPRA-ISO and SOPRA-ISO PLUS (polyisocyanurate boards), and SOPRAROCK DD PLUS (mineral insulation board). It must not be used with extruded or expanded polystyrene boards.

Applications:

This product is applied by mop in hot liquid form to adhere roofing components. It is suitable for use in built-up roofing systems and SBS-modified bitumen systems where a hot-applied adhesive is required. It is particularly effective for bonding base sheets and insulation boards to the roof deck or to each other.

Application Details:

SOPRASPHALTE OX TYPE II is mop-applied at a rate of 1.0 to 1.5 kg/m² (20 to 25 lb/100 ft²), which corresponds to an approximate wet film thickness of 1.2 mm (45 mils). During application, the bitumen must be heated to a temperature of 220–230 °C (425–450 °F) when contacting SBS base sheet membranes, recovery boards, or mineral insulation boards. For polyisocyanurate insulation boards, the bitumen temperature must be at least 10 °C (50 °F) below the Equiviscous Temperature (EVT), which ensures optimal viscosity for adhesion. At ambient temperatures below 15 °C (59 °F), only 1 meter (3 feet) of bitumen should be spread ahead of the roll to prevent premature cooling; at temperatures above 15 °C (59 °F), up to 3 meters (9 feet) is acceptable.

Special Notes:

- SOPRASPHALTE OX TYPE II must never be heated above 260 °C (500 °F) in the kettle to avoid degradation. The product must be kept in continuous motion during heating.

- This material is not UV stable and must be protected by a cap sheet or other UV-resistant layer.

- The product is supplied in bulk and is black in color with a specific gravity of 1.03 g/mL.

- It has a softening point between 75–83 °C (167–181 °F) and a flash point of 260 °C (500 °F).

- The product demonstrates excellent solubility (99%) in trichloroethylene and maintains 80% of its original penetration after volatilization testing.

- Storage must be in a dry, protected area away from open flames and welding sparks.

- SOPRASPHALTE OX TYPE II is not suitable for adhering cap sheets and should only be used with compatible base sheets and substrates as specified.

This material is a key component in hot-applied roofing systems and should be used in accordance with SOPREMA’s guidelines to ensure proper performance and durability.
