Viper II 10-mil is a high-performance under-slab vapor barrier designed to prevent moisture migration through concrete slabs-on-grade. It is used in commercial, industrial, and residential construction to control water vapor emission, reduce condensation, and protect against mold, mildew, and flooring failures. Additionally, it serves as a barrier against radon and methane gas migration, making it suitable for environmentally sensitive applications.

System Components:

The Viper II 10-mil vapor barrier system includes the primary membrane (Viper II 10-mil), Viper Double Bond Tape, Viper Vapor Tape, Viper VaporPatch, and VaporCheck Mastic. These components work together to create a continuous, sealed, and monolithic vapor barrier system beneath concrete slabs. The tapes and mastic are used to seal overlaps, penetrations, and terminations to ensure complete moisture and gas protection.

Applications:

This vapor barrier is ideal for use under concrete slabs in a variety of settings, including warehouses, manufacturing facilities, office buildings, schools, hospitals, and residential homes. It is particularly beneficial in areas where moisture-sensitive flooring materials are installed or where soil gases such as radon and methane are a concern.

Application Details:

Installation begins with proper sub-grade preparation, including leveling and compacting the granular base. The Viper II 10-mil should be unrolled with the longest dimension parallel to the direction of the concrete pour and extended over footings or sealed to foundation walls or grade beams. Overlaps must be a minimum of six inches and sealed using Viper Vapor Tape or Viper Double Bond Tape. Penetrations such as pipes or columns must be sealed using Viper VaporPatch, VaporCheck Mastic, or a combination of the barrier and sealing tapes. Care must be taken to avoid puncturing the membrane during installation of rebar or utilities. If punctures occur, they must be repaired immediately using the appropriate sealing products.

- Thickness: Nominal 10-mil (0.010 inches).

- Temperature Range: Operational from -70°F to 180°F.

- Water Vapor Permeance: 0.0073 perms (ASTM F 1249), exceeding ASTM E 1745 Class A requirements.

- Puncture Resistance: 2,747 grams (ASTM D 1709) and 73 lbs (ASTM E 154).

- Tensile Strength: 55 lbf/in (ASTM D 882) and 3,017 PSI (ASTM D 638).

- Gas Resistance: Radon diffusion coefficient of 7.2 x 10⁻¹² m²/sec and methane permeance of 3.34E-14 mol/m²·s·Pa.

- UV Resistance: Not UV stable; intended for below-grade use only.

- Maintenance: No maintenance required post-installation.

- Limitations: Not designed for above-grade or exposed applications. Care must be taken to avoid damage during installation. If a cushion layer is used, washed rock is preferred to minimize puncture risk.
