Material Use:
Viper® Venom Barrier 20-mil is a high-performance under-slab vapor and gas barrier designed to resist the transmission of water vapor and harmful soil gases such as methane, radon, sulfates, and petroleum-based contaminants. It is intended for use beneath concrete slabs to protect indoor air quality and structural integrity by preventing moisture and gas intrusion from the soil.
System Components:
The Viper® Venom Barrier system includes the 20-mil co-extruded barrier film and a range of compatible accessories for sealing and installation. These include:
- Viper Double Bond Tape – for sealing seams and terminations.
- Viper Vapor Tape – used in conjunction with Double Bond Tape for enhanced sealing.
- Viper VaporCheck Mastic – for sealing around penetrations.
- Approved two-component construction-grade epoxy – recommended for sealing multiple pipe penetrations in soil gas applications.
- Optional non-woven geotextile fabric – may be required for added protection in soil gas mitigation systems.
Applications:
This material is suitable for use in commercial, industrial, and residential construction projects where a high-performance vapor and gas barrier is required beneath concrete slabs. It is especially effective in environments with high soil moisture or contamination risks, such as brownfield redevelopment sites, areas with known radon or methane presence, or where indoor air quality is a concern.
Application Details:
Installation should follow ASTM E 1643 guidelines. The sub-grade must be properly prepared, leveled, and compacted. A 4" to 6" layer of clean coarse aggregate may be required, especially in soil gas mitigation systems. The barrier should be unrolled with the longest dimension parallel to the direction of the concrete pour and extended over footings, sealed to foundation walls or grade beams. Seams must be overlapped by a minimum of 12 inches and sealed using Viper Double Bond Tape and Viper Vapor Tape. Penetrations should be sealed using a combination of the barrier material, tapes, and mastic. For high-risk soil gas applications, foil or EVOH tape may be used for additional sealing.
Special Notes:
- Material Composition: 7-layer co-extruded film made from virgin HDPE, LDPE, and EVOH for superior gas and moisture resistance.
- Thickness: Nominal 20 mils.
- Weight: 102 lbs/MSF.
- Operating Temperature Range: -70°F to 180°F.
- Water Vapor Permeance: 0.0052 perms (ASTM E 96, Procedure B).
- Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR): 0.0022 grains/(ft²·hr).
- Puncture Resistance: 2,400 grams (ASTM D 1709, Method B).
- Tensile Strength: 54 lbf/in (ASTM D 882).
- UV Stability: Not UV stable – must be protected from prolonged sunlight exposure during installation.
- Maintenance: No maintenance required after installation.
- Environmental Resistance: Exceeds ASTM E 1745 Class A, B, and C requirements. Demonstrates excellent resistance to diffusion of VOCs and radon.
- Diffusion Coefficients: Extremely low for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and radon, indicating excellent gas barrier performance.
Limitations:
- Not designed for above-grade or exposed applications.
- Must be protected during installation to avoid punctures or tears.
- Avoid driving stakes through the barrier; if unavoidable, all penetrations must be sealed.
- Not UV resistant; prolonged exposure to sunlight should be avoided.
Coverage:
Standard roll size is 12 ft x 100 ft (1,200 ft² per roll). Coverage is based on area and should account for overlaps and waste during installation.
System Compatibility:
Viper® Venom Barrier 20-mil is compatible with other Viper-branded sealing accessories and may be integrated into broader soil gas mitigation systems when used in conjunction with geotextile fabrics and approved epoxies. It is not a standalone waterproofing membrane but functions as a critical component in a comprehensive vapor and gas mitigation system beneath concrete slabs.
