Description
Alkyd Dry Fall Flat is a modified alkyd paint for interior use. Overspray dries to a removable dust within eight feet at 77°F (25°C) and 50% relative humidity.
Material Use:
Alkyd Dryfall Flat is a modified alkyd-based interior coating designed for spray application in large commercial and industrial spaces. It is specifically formulated to dry rapidly in the air and fall as a dry dust within approximately 8 feet from the point of application, making it ideal for overhead applications where overspray cleanup is a concern. This product is suitable for use in USDA-inspected facilities and offers high light reflectance, making it particularly effective in brightening large interior spaces such as warehouses, manufacturing plants, and gymnasiums.
System Components:
Alkyd Dryfall Flat is typically used as a topcoat in a multi-layer system. The complete system includes:
- Primer (substrate-dependent):
- *Steel:* Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Primer or Kem Bond HS
- *Aluminum & Galvanized Metal:* DTM Wash Primer
- *Concrete Block (CMU):* Pro Industrial Heavy Duty Block Filler or Loxon Acrylic Block Surfacer
- *Concrete, Masonry, Plaster:* Loxon Concrete & Masonry Primer
- *Drywall:* ProMar 200 Zero VOC Primer
- *Wood (Interior):* Premium Wall & Wood Primer
- Topcoat: 1–2 coats of Alkyd Dryfall Flat
Applications:
This product is recommended for use on properly prepared structural steel, galvanized metal, drywall, plaster, concrete, masonry, and wood. It is ideal for interior ceilings and overhead surfaces in:
- Warehouses
- Industrial and commercial buildings
- Institutional facilities
- Textile mills
- Manufacturing plants
- Gymnasiums
- Parking garage ceilings (not exposed to direct weathering)
Application Details:
- Application Method: Spray only (airless or conventional). Brush and roller application are not recommended.
- Airless Spray Settings: 2500 psi, 1/4" hose, 0.017–0.019" tip, 60 mesh filter
- Conventional Spray Settings: Binks 95 gun, 63C fluid nozzle, 63PB air nozzle, 60 psi atomization pressure, 50 psi fluid pressure
- Reducer:
- Below 100°F: VM&P Naphtha (R1K3)
- Above 100°F: Mineral Spirits (R1K4)
- Up to 5% reduction allowed (not in restricted areas)
- Surface Preparation: All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants. Specific preparation varies by substrate and may include sanding, solvent cleaning (SSPC-SP1), hand tool cleaning (SSPC-SP2), or commercial blast cleaning (SSPC-SP6).
- Stripe Coating: Recommended for welds, crevices, and sharp angles to prevent early failure.
- Film Thickness:
- Wet: 8.0–12.0 mils
- Dry: 2.9–4.3 mils
- Coverage:
- 134–198 sq. ft. per gallon at recommended thickness
- Theoretical: 577 sq. ft. per gallon at 1 mil dry film
Special Notes:
- Dryfall Characteristics: Overspray dries to dust within 8 feet at 77°F and 50% RH. This distance may increase to 8–16 feet at lower temperatures (e.g., 55°F).
- Dry Time (at 8.0 mils wet, 50% RH):
- 55°F: Touch – 40 min, Recoat – 6 hrs, Cure – 9 days
- 77°F: Touch – 10 min, Recoat – 4 hrs, Cure – 7 days
- 100°F: Touch – 3 min, Recoat – 2 hrs, Cure – 1 day
- Temperature & Humidity Limits:
- Application temperature: 50°F to 100°F (10°C to 37°C)
- Must be at least 5°F above dew point
- Maximum relative humidity: 75%
- Pot Life: Not applicable (single-component product)
- UV Resistance: Not UV stable; for interior use only
- VOC Content:
- White: 329 g/L (2.74 lbs/gal)
- Black: 358 g/L
- Shelf Life: 12 months unopened
- Flash Point:
- White: 76°F (PMCC)
- Black: 58°F (PMCC)
- Light Reflectance: White – 81%
- Safety: Overspray may adhere to hot surfaces. Rags and waste soaked with this product may spontaneously combust—dispose of properly in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
- Compliance: Complies with OTC, CARB, and Canadian regulations. Not compliant with SCAQMD or LEED v4 VOC/emissions requirements.
Summary:
Alkyd Dryfall Flat is a professional-grade, interior-use coating system designed for efficient spray application in large-scale commercial and industrial environments. It is best used in combination with appropriate primers based on substrate type and is not suitable for exterior or UV-exposed applications. Its dryfall properties make it ideal for overhead applications where overspray control is critical.
