Description
A high-solids, low-VOC, heavy metal-free primer, Kem Bond® HS can be top coated with alkyd, acrylic and high-performance coatings. Also suitable as a "barrier" coat over conventional coatings which would normally be attacked by strong solvents in high-performance coatings.
Material Use:
Kem Bond® HS is a high-solids, fast-drying, rust-inhibitive phenolic alkyd primer designed for use on properly prepared steel surfaces. It serves as a universal metal primer that can be topcoated with a wide range of alkyd, acrylic, and high-performance coatings. It is also suitable as a barrier coat over conventional coatings that may otherwise be sensitive to strong solvents found in high-performance systems.
System Components:
Kem Bond® HS is typically used as the primer layer in a multi-coat system. It is compatible with a variety of topcoats, including:
- Acrolon 218 HS Polyurethane
- Hi-Solids Polyurethane
- Macropoxy 646 Epoxy
- Macropoxy HS Epoxy
- Tile-Clad HS Epoxy
- Pro Industrial Acrylic
- Pro Industrial Waterbased Epoxy
- Pro Industrial Multi-Surface Acrylic
- Pro Industrial Pre-Catalyzed Epoxy & Urethane
- Pro Industrial Urethane Alkyd Enamel
- Pro Industrial Waterbased Acrolon 100
- Sher-Cryl
- Silver-Brite Aluminum
- Industrial Enamel
- Metalatex Semi-Gloss Enamel
- Steel Master 9500
Applications:
Kem Bond® HS is recommended for use in both interior and exterior environments on steel substrates. Common applications include:
- Structural steel
- Marine applications
- Steel piping
- Machinery
- Tanks
- Bar joists
- Handrails
- Maintenance and repair priming
Application Details:
- Surface Preparation: Steel surfaces should be cleaned to SSPC-SP1 (solvent cleaning) and ideally blast cleaned to SSPC-SP6/NACE 3 for optimal adhesion. Previously painted surfaces must be sound, clean, and abraded to ensure adhesion.
- Application Methods: Airless spray is preferred (1800 psi, 0.017–0.019" tip), with brush and roller application acceptable for small areas. Use natural bristle brushes and 1/4–3/8" solvent-resistant roller covers.
- Film Thickness: Apply at 3.0–8.0 wet mils (1.8–4.8 dry mils). Exceeding or falling below this range may compromise performance.
- Coverage: Theoretical coverage is 962 sq. ft./gal at 1 mil dry. Practical coverage per coat ranges from 200–534 sq. ft./gal depending on application method and surface profile.
- Drying Times at 4.0 mils wet, 50% RH:
- Touch dry: 30 min @ 77°F
- Tack-free: 1 hour @ 77°F
- Recoat with alkyds: 2 hours @ 77°F
- Recoat with high-performance coatings: 24 hours @ 77°F
- Recoat with acrylic latex: 24 hours @ 77°F
- Full cure: 2 days @ 77°F
- Pot Life: Not applicable (single-component product)
- Temperature & Humidity Limits: Apply between 40°F and 120°F, with surface temperature at least 5°F above dew point. Maximum relative humidity is 85%.
Special Notes:
- Kem Bond® HS is not recommended for immersion service or exposure to acids, alkalis, or strong solvents.
- This primer is considered a temporary protective coating per AISC guidelines and should be topcoated for long-term protection.
- The product is flat in finish and available in Red Oxide, Off White, and Gray.
- VOC content is 336 g/L (2.81 lb/gal), and it complies with OTC and Canadian regulations but not with SCAQMD or LEED v4 VOC limits.
- Shelf life is 36 months unopened.
- Not UV stable on its own; UV resistance depends on the selected topcoat.
- Clean tools and equipment with compliant solvents such as Xylene or R2K4. Dispose of solvent-soaked materials properly to avoid fire hazards.
Kem Bond® HS is a versatile and effective primer for steel substrates, forming the foundation of a durable coating system when paired with compatible high-performance topcoats.
