Description

A high-build alkyd coating, Pro Industrial™ Direct-to-Metal Enamel offers rust-inhibitive properties for application directly to bare steel.

Material Use:

Pro Industrial™ Direct-To-Metal (DTM) Alkyd Enamel is a high-build, rust-inhibitive alkyd coating designed for direct application to bare steel and other properly prepared metal surfaces. It serves as both a corrosion-resistant primer and a durable finish coat, making it ideal for industrial and commercial applications where protection and aesthetics are required in a single product.

System Components:

This product can be used as a standalone system or in combination with various primers depending on the substrate and service conditions. For light service steel applications, a single coat of DTM Alkyd Enamel is sufficient. For moderate service, two coats are recommended. When used with primers, the following systems are suggested:

- Steel (Alkyd Primer System): 1 coat of Pro Industrial Kem Bond® HS Primer or Pro Industrial Kem Kromik® Primer, followed by 1 coat of DTM Alkyd Enamel.

- Steel (Acrylic Primer System): 1 coat of Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl® Primer, followed by 1 coat of DTM Alkyd Enamel.

- Aluminum and Galvanized Steel: 1 coat of Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl® Primer, followed by 1 coat of DTM Alkyd Enamel.

- Concrete and Masonry: Surface must be cleaned and conditioned with Loxon Conditioner before applying DTM Alkyd Enamel.

- Wood and Drywall: Must be primed with a suitable primer before application of the DTM Alkyd Enamel.

Applications:

This coating is suitable for both interior and exterior use in new construction and maintenance projects. Typical applications include:

- Structural steel

- Railings

- Machinery

- Steel doors and decking

- Storage tanks

- Bar joists

- Piping

- Fire escapes

- Conveyors

- Repaints and primer-finish systems

Application Details:

- Application Methods: Airless spray, conventional spray, brush, or roller. Natural bristle brushes and 3/8" woven solvent-resistant rollers are recommended.

- Recommended Wet Film Thickness (WFT): 7.0–13.0 mils

- Recommended Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 3.0–5.6 mils

- Coverage Rate: 123–229 sq. ft. per gallon per coat, depending on film thickness. Theoretical coverage is 689 sq. ft. per gallon at 1 mil DFT.

- Pot Life: Not applicable (single-component product).

- Dry Time @ 77°F and 50% RH:

- To touch: 1–3 hours

- To handle: 4–6 hours

- To recoat: 18 hours

- Dry Time @ 120°F:

- To touch: 1 hour

- To handle: 1.5 hours

- To recoat: 18 hours

- Full Cure Time: Not explicitly stated; allow at least 16–24 hours of dry time before exposure to moisture.

- Temperature Range for Application: Minimum 40°F (4.4°C), maximum 120°F (49°C); must be at least 5°F above dew point.

- Relative Humidity Limit: Maximum 85%

- Surface Preparation: Varies by substrate. Steel should be cleaned to SSPC-SP2 or SP6 for best results. Aluminum and galvanized surfaces require solvent cleaning (SSPC-SP1) and priming. Concrete and masonry require cleaning to SSPC-SP13/ICRI CSP 1-3 and conditioning. Wood and drywall must be clean, dry, and primed.

Special Notes:

- This product is not compliant with VOC regulations in several jurisdictions including OTC, SCAQMD, CARB, and Canada.

- Not LEED v4 or v4.1 compliant for VOC or emissions.

- Not UV stable; exterior applications may experience color fading over time.

- During early drying stages, the coating is sensitive to rain, dew, and high humidity. Avoid exposure to moisture for at least 16–24 hours after application.

- For best results, stripe coat welds, crevices, and sharp angles to prevent early failure.

- Clean tools and equipment with compliant solvent immediately after use.

- Rags and waste soaked with this product may spontaneously combust; dispose of properly in a sealed, water-filled metal container.

This product is ideal for industrial and commercial metal protection where a semi-gloss finish and corrosion resistance are required in a single application. It can be used as part of a system with various primers for enhanced performance on different substrates.
