Description
Applied to existing waterborne coatings and select solvent-based coatings, Sher-Clear™ provides color and gloss protection over newly applied industrial water-borne coatings and select solvent-based coatings.
Material Use:
Sher-Clear™ is a one-component (1K), waterborne, UV-resistant acrylic clear coat designed to provide long-lasting gloss and color protection over newly applied or existing industrial waterborne and select solvent-based coatings. It is primarily used as a protective topcoat to enhance weathering resistance and maintain aesthetic appearance in exterior environments.
System Components:
Sher-Clear™ functions as a final clear coat in a multi-layer coating system. It is applied over compatible base coats such as waterborne acrylics and certain alkyds. It does not require a separate primer but must be applied over a properly prepared and compatible base coat. The system typically includes:
- Base Coat: Compatible acrylic or alkyd coatings (e.g., Pro Industrial Acrylic, Pro Industrial DTM Acrylic, Sher-Cryl, Industrial Enamel)
- Top Coat: Sher-Clear™ 1K Waterborne Acrylic Clear Coat
Applications:
Sher-Clear™ is recommended for exterior use in a variety of industrial and commercial settings. Typical applications include:
- Equipment and machinery
- Exterior storage tanks
- Piping and structural steel
- Corporate logos and signage
- Amusement parks
- USDA-inspected facilities (suitable for use)
Application Details:
Sher-Clear™ can be applied by brush, roller, or spray. It is designed for use in ambient conditions with the following parameters:
- Application Temperature Range: 50°F to 120°F (10°C to 49°C), with surface, air, and material temperatures at least 5°F above the dew point
- Relative Humidity Limit: Maximum 85%
- Recommended Wet Film Thickness: 3.0–5.5 mils
- Recommended Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 1.0–2.0 mils per coat
- Coverage Rate: 288–577 sq. ft. per gallon depending on film thickness (theoretical coverage at 1 mil DFT is 577 sq. ft./gal)
- Application Equipment: Airless spray (1500 psi, 0.013–0.015 tip), conventional spray, brush (nylon-polyester), or roller (1/4–3/8 inch woven cover)
Curing and Pot Life:
- Pot Life: Not applicable (1K product)
- Dry to Touch: 45 minutes at 77°F (25°C)
- Dry to Handle: 1 hour at 77°F
- Recoat Time (with itself): 2 hours at 77°F
- Full Cure Time: 14 days at 77°F (longer at lower temperatures, shorter at higher temperatures)
Special Notes:
- Sher-Clear™ is UV-resistant and maintains gloss and clarity in exterior environments.
- Do not apply more than 2.0 mils dry film thickness per coat to avoid a cloudy or milky appearance.
- Not recommended over white or very light pastel-colored alkyds due to potential discoloration.
- Always test compatibility with existing coatings by applying a 2–3 sq. ft. test patch and allowing it to cure for one week before evaluating adhesion.
- Do not tint this product.
- Clean tools and equipment with soap and warm water immediately after use.
- Shelf life is 12 months in unopened containers.
- VOC content is 127 g/L (1.06 lbs/gal), compliant with most regional regulations except SCAQMD.
Sher-Clear™ is an ideal clear topcoat for extending the life and appearance of industrial coatings in demanding outdoor environments. It is best used as part of a system with compatible base coats and should be applied under controlled environmental conditions to ensure optimal performance.
