Description

Methyl Ethyl Ketone is a thinner for specified coatings, including polyester and epoxy resins, ink and adhesives.  It is recommended for use when a rate of evaporation slower than acetone is desired.

Material Use:

Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) is a fast-evaporating, highly flammable solvent primarily used in industrial settings. It is widely employed for thinning various types of resins, coatings, adhesives, and vinyl films. MEK is also utilized for cleaning equipment and surfaces due to its high solvency.

System Components:

This product is a single-component solvent and does not inherently include a multi-component system. However, it is commonly used as part of larger coating or resin systems as a cleaner or solvent additive.

Applications:

MEK is used as:

  • A solvent for synthetic resins, vinyl coatings, epoxies, and adhesives.
  • A cleaning agent for metal surfaces, tools, and application equipment.
  • A diluent in coating formulations to control viscosity and drying time.

It is compatible with many common organic materials and solvents and may also be used in preparation stages before applying waterproofing or coating materials.

Application Details:

  • Flash Point: -6.1°C (closed cup) — highly flammable.
  • Boiling Point Range: 70–79°C
  • Evaporation Rate: 2.6 (n-butyl acetate = 1) — evaporates rapidly.
  • Vapour Density: 2.49 (heavier than air — can accumulate in low areas)
  • Viscosity: 0.53 mm²/s (kinematic at 20°C)
  • Solubility: Soluble in water (27.5 g/100 mL) and miscible with most organic solvents.
  • Auto-ignition Temperature: 404°C
  • Recommended Engineering Controls: Use in well-ventilated areas with explosion-proof ventilation systems.

Environmental and Safety Considerations:

  • Should be used away from open flames and static discharge sources.
  • Requires grounding and bonding during transfers.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must include gloves, goggles, and appropriate respirators when ventilation is inadequate.

Special Notes:

  • Temperature & Storage: Must be stored in a tightly sealed container in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from ignition sources and incompatible materials such as oxidizers and strong acids.
  • Health Hazards: Causes serious eye irritation and may cause drowsiness or dizziness upon inhalation.
  • Compatibility: Highly reactive with oxidizing agents and acids — do not mix directly with reactive coatings unless specified.
  • Regulatory Classifications: Flammable Liquid – Category 2; Eye Irritation – Category 2A; STOT Single Exposure – Category 3.
  • Transport Classification: UN1193, Flammable Liquid Class 3, Packing Group II.

This material is typically not a primary coating or repair material but serves as a critical auxiliary solvent in various systems. It should be handled with caution and is best used as a part of a broader formulation or preparation process for coating and waterproofing applications.
