Material Use:
ALSAN RS 222 PRIMER is a two-component, flexible, and rapid-curing primer based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). It is specifically designed to enhance adhesion between substrates and the ALSAN RS waterproofing and surfacing systems. This primer is a critical preparatory component in the ALSAN RS System, ensuring optimal bonding and performance of subsequent layers.
System Components:
ALSAN RS 222 PRIMER is used in conjunction with ALSAN RS CATALYST POWDER, which initiates the curing process. It is a foundational component of the ALSAN RS System, which includes base coats, reinforcement layers, and topcoats. The primer must be used prior to the application of ALSAN RS base coats and membranes to ensure proper adhesion and system integrity.
Applications:
This primer is suitable for use on a variety of substrates including asphalt-based surfaces, wood planks, timber, wood sheathing, and cementitious substrates. It is commonly applied in roofing systems, balconies, and plaza deck waterproofing assemblies. The product is ideal for both new construction and renovation projects where ALSAN RS systems are specified.
Application Details:
- Mixing: ALSAN RS 222 PRIMER must be mixed with ALSAN RS CATALYST POWDER immediately before application. The catalyst percentage varies with ambient temperature:
- 6% at 0–10 °C (32–50 °F)
- 4% at 10–20 °C (50–68 °F)
- 2% at 20–35 °C (68–95 °F)
Mix thoroughly for 2–3 minutes using a slow-speed mechanical agitator (200–400 rpm).
- Application Method: Apply using a 3/8-inch nap roller or brush to a clean, prepared surface. Ensure even distribution of the resin.
- Coverage Rates:
- Smooth surfaces (CSP 1): ~25 mils thickness, 0.4 kg/m² (0.037 kg/ft²), ~10 kg covers 25 m² (269 ft²)
- Sanded SBS base sheet (CSP 4): ~20 mils, 0.5 kg/m² (0.046 kg/ft²), ~10 kg covers 20 m² (215 ft²)
- Granulated SBS sheet (CSP 5): ~16.6 m² (179 ft²) per 10 kg
- Rough surfaces (CSP 6): ~12.5 m² (134 ft²) per 10 kg
- Pot Life: Approximately 15 minutes at 20 °C (68 °F)
- Rainproof Time: 30 minutes
- Set Time / Walkable / Next Layer: 30 minutes
- Full Cure Time: 3 hours
- Application Temperature Ranges:
- Ambient: 0–35 °C (32–95 °F)
- Substrate: 0–50 °C (32–122 °F)
- Resin: 3–30 °C (37–86 °F)
Special Notes:
- ALSAN RS 222 PRIMER is not UV stable and must be covered with subsequent ALSAN RS layers.
- The product has a very low VOC content (<5 g/L), making it suitable for use in environmentally sensitive projects.
- The primer must be stored indoors at 13–27 °C (55–80 °F) and protected from direct sunlight, heat, and ignition sources.
- Shelf life is approximately 12 months when stored in original, unopened containers.
