Description
A high-build alkyd coating, Direct-to-Metal Enamel offers rust-inhibitive properties for application directly to bare steel.
Material Use:
Direct-To-Metal Alkyd Enamel is a high-build, rust-inhibitive alkyd coating designed for direct application to bare steel and other properly prepared metal surfaces. It serves as both a primer and finish coat in light to moderate service environments, offering corrosion resistance and a semi-gloss finish. It is suitable for both interior and exterior applications and is commonly used in new construction and maintenance projects.
System Components:
This product can be used as a single-coat system for light-duty applications or as part of a multi-coat system for enhanced durability. For moderate service, two coats of Direct-To-Metal Enamel are recommended. When used with a primer, the following systems are suggested:
- Steel (Alkyd Primer System): 1 coat Kem Bond HS Primer or Kem Kromik Universal Metal Primer + 1 coat Direct-To-Metal Enamel
- Steel (Acrylic Primer System): 1 coat Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Primer + 1 coat Direct-To-Metal Enamel
- Aluminum & Galvanized Steel: 1 coat Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Primer + 1 coat Direct-To-Metal Enamel
- Concrete, Masonry, Drywall, and Wood: Require appropriate surface preparation and priming with recommended primers such as Loxon Conditioner for masonry or other suitable primers for wood and drywall.
Applications:
This enamel is ideal for use on structural steel, machinery, steel doors, decking, storage tanks, bar joists, piping, conveyors, fire escapes, and railings. It is also suitable for repainting previously coated surfaces, provided proper surface preparation is performed.
Application Details:
- Application Methods: Airless spray (2400 psi, 0.019" tip), conventional spray (Binks 95 gun), brush (natural bristle), or roller (3/8" woven solvent-resistant core).
- Recommended Film Thickness:
- Wet: 7.0–13.0 mils
- Dry: 3.0–5.6 mils
- Coverage: 123–229 sq. ft. per gallon per coat (theoretical coverage at 1 mil dry is 689 sq. ft./gal).
- Pot Life: Not applicable (single-component product).
- Drying Time @ 77°F, 50% RH, 7.0 mils wet:
- To touch: 1–3 hours
- To handle: 4–6 hours
- To recoat: 18 hours
- Full Cure Time: Not explicitly stated, but early stages of drying are sensitive to moisture for up to 24 hours.
- Temperature Range for Application: Minimum 40°F (4.4°C), maximum 120°F (49°C); surface must be at least 5°F above dew point.
- Humidity Limit: Maximum 85% relative humidity during application.
- UV Resistance: Not UV stable; may chalk or degrade over time with prolonged UV exposure.
- VOC Content: 441 g/L (3.68 lbs/gal), not compliant with many environmental regulations (e.g., LEED, CARB, SCAQMD).
- Shelf Life: 36 months unopened.
Special Notes:
- This product is not compliant with several environmental standards (e.g., LEED v4, CARB, SCAQMD), making it unsuitable for use in regulated green building projects.
- During early curing, the coating is sensitive to rain, dew, and high humidity. Avoid exposure to moisture for at least 16–24 hours after application.
- Not recommended for immersion service or areas requiring high chemical resistance.
- For best results, stripe coat welds, crevices, and sharp edges to prevent early failure.
- Surface preparation is critical; bare steel should be cleaned to SSPC-SP6/NACE 3 for optimal performance.
- Clean tools and equipment with compliant solvents immediately after use.
- This product is flammable and rags or waste soaked with it may spontaneously combust. Dispose of properly in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
This material is best used as a protective and decorative coating for metal substrates in industrial and commercial environments where moderate durability and corrosion resistance are required. It can be used as part of a system with compatible primers for enhanced performance on various substrates including steel, aluminum, galvanized metal, and masonry.
