Description
Pro Industrial™ DTM Wash Primer is a water-based wash primer designed to be applied over aluminum and galvanizing, or used as a tie-coat over zinc-rich primers. Accepts high performance "hot" solvent topcoats directly, such as epoxies and urethanes.
Material Use:
DTM Wash Primer is a water-based wash primer specifically formulated for direct application over aluminum, galvanized steel, stainless steel, and as a tie-coat over zinc-rich primers. It is designed to promote adhesion of high-performance solvent-based topcoats such as epoxies and urethanes. This primer is ideal for use in industrial and commercial environments, including USDA-inspected facilities, where corrosion resistance and strong adhesion are required.
System Components:
DTM Wash Primer is typically used as the first coat in a multi-layer coating system. It must be topcoated, as it does not provide significant corrosion protection on its own. Recommended systems include:
- Aluminum & Galvanizing: 1 coat DTM Wash Primer + 2 coats Pro Industrial Acrylic
- Stainless Steel: 1 coat DTM Wash Primer + 2 coats Pro Industrial Acrylic
- Steel: 1 coat Zinc Clad Primer + 1 coat DTM Wash Primer + 2 coats Pro Industrial Acrylic

Applications:
DTM Wash Primer is suitable for use on:
- Aluminum
- Galvanized steel
- Stainless steel
- Zinc-rich primers
It is not recommended for use over heavily blasted metal or chemical treatments on steel, galvanized steel, or aluminum, as this may result in adhesion failure.
Application Details:
- Application Method: Airless or conventional spray only. Brush and roller are not recommended except for touch-up.
- Recommended Wet Film Thickness: 3.4 – 6.4 mils
- Recommended Dry Film Thickness: 0.7 – 1.4 mils
- Coverage: 251 – 502 sq. ft. per gallon depending on film thickness; theoretical coverage is 352 sq. ft. per gallon at 1 mil dry.
- Mixing: Mix thoroughly with a low-speed power mixer before use. Avoid air entrapment.
- Spray Details:
- *Airless Spray:* 1500 psi, 1/4" hose, 0.015–0.017" tip, 80 mesh filter
- *Conventional Spray:* Binks 95 gun, 66 fluid nozzle, 63 PB air nozzle, 50 psi atomization, 15–25 psi fluid pressure
- Reduction: Not recommended for airless; up to 12.5% by volume for conventional spray if needed
Environmental & Application Conditions:
- Temperature Range: 50°F to 110°F (10°C to 49°C) for air, surface, and material
- Humidity Limit: Maximum 85% relative humidity
- Dew Point: Surface temperature must be at least 5°F above dew point
Curing and Pot Life:
- Pot Life: Not specified (water-based, single-component)
- Dry to Touch: 1–3 hours depending on temperature
- Dry to Handle: 1–3 hours
- Recoat Time: 1–8 hours depending on temperature
- Full Cure: 3–7 days depending on temperature
Special Notes:
- DTM Wash Primer is not UV stable and must be topcoated.
- It does not provide corrosion protection on its own and should not be used as a standalone primer.
- Not suitable for application over chemical treatments or heavily blasted surfaces.
- Surface preparation is critical; follow SSPC-SP1 for cleaning and SSPC-SP2 or SP16 for mechanical preparation as needed.
- Shelf life is 36 months unopened.
- VOC content is 98 g/L (0.82 lbs/gal), compliant with major environmental regulations including OTC, CARB, and SCAQMD.
- Not LEED v4 emissions certified but meets LEED v4 VOC requirements.
