Description
Galvite™ HS may be used un-top coated or top coated with select waterborne or solvent based coatings. It has great adhesion to properly prepared galvanized and aluminum substrates.
Material Use:
Galvite™ HS is a solvent-based, alkyd-modified acrylic coating designed for use in mild industrial, commercial, and architectural environments. It is formulated for direct application to galvanized and aluminum substrates, as well as primed ferrous metals and zinc-rich primers. It can be used as a standalone finish or as a base coat for compatible topcoats. The product offers excellent adhesion to galvanized and aluminum surfaces, early moisture resistance, and good resistance to acids and alkalis.
System Components:
Galvite™ HS can be used as a single-coat system or as part of a multi-coat system. For rusted galvanized surfaces, it is recommended to spot prime with Kem Bond HS before applying Galvite™ HS. When used as a base coat, Galvite™ HS can be topcoated with a variety of waterborne or solvent-based coatings, including:

Application Details:
- Surface Preparation: All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants. For aluminum and galvanized surfaces, solvent cleaning per SSPC-SP1 is required. Rusted areas should be spot primed with Kem Bond HS. Factory-finished metal roof decks should be tested for adhesion.
- Application Methods: Can be applied by airless spray, conventional spray, brush, or roller.
- Airless Spray: 2400 psi, 0.015" tip, 60 mesh filter
- Conventional Spray: Binks 95 gun, 63A fluid nozzle, 63PB air nozzle
- Brush: Nylon-polyester or natural bristle
- Roller: 3/8" nap synthetic or lambswool
- Film Thickness:
- Wet: 5.0–7.0 mils
- Dry: 3.0–4.2 mils
- Coverage: 229–320 sq. ft. per gallon per coat
- Theoretical coverage: 962 sq. ft. per gallon @ 1 mil dry
- Drying Times (at 5.0 mils wet, 50% RH):
- 40°F: Touch – 8–10 hrs, Handle – 16 hrs, Recoat – 24 hrs, Full Cure – 21 days
- 77°F: Touch – 1.5 hrs, Handle – 4 hrs, Recoat – 4.5 hrs, Full Cure – 14 days
- 100°F: Touch – 15 min, Handle – 30 min, Recoat – 1 hr, Full Cure – 7 days
- Pot Life: Not applicable (single-component product)
- Temperature & Humidity Limits:
- Application temperature: 40°F to 100°F (4.4°C to 38°C)
- Must be at least 5°F above dew point
- Maximum relative humidity: 85%
- Reducers:
- Below 80°F: Xylene (R2K4)
- Above 80°F: Aromatic Hi-Flash Naphtha (R2K5)
- Reduction up to 3% by volume if needed (not in restricted areas)
Special Notes:
- Galvite™ HS is not UV stable as a standalone finish and is best used with a compatible topcoat for exterior durability.
- Do not tint when used as a finish coat. If used as a guide coat, do not exceed ½ oz of colorant per gallon.
- Shelf life is 36 months unopened.
- VOC content is 337 g/L (2.81 lbs/gal), which may not comply with stricter VOC regulations (e.g., SCAQMD, CARB).
- Not LEED v4 compliant for emissions or VOC.
- Not EPD-NSF certified.
- Clean tools and equipment immediately after use with compliant solvents.
- Always follow safety precautions and consult the SDS before use.
System Recommendations:
For a complete system on galvanized or aluminum surfaces:
- Base Coat: 1–2 coats of Galvite™ HS
- Topcoat (optional for enhanced durability and UV resistance): 1–2 coats of any listed compatible topcoat such as Pro Industrial Acrylic or Sher-Cryl
For rusted galvanized surfaces:
- Primer: Spot prime with Kem Bond HS
- Base Coat: 1–2 coats of Galvite™ HS
- Topcoat (optional): As above
This product is ideal for interior and exterior metal surfaces where moderate protection and good adhesion to galvanized or aluminum substrates are required.
