Intended for industrial applications, Kem® 4000 is ideal for interior or exterior applications, the refinishing of industrial, construction and agricultural equipment, as well as a wide range of general metal applications.

Material Use:

Kem® 4000 is a high-solids, fast-drying, general-purpose acrylic alkyd enamel designed for both interior and exterior industrial applications. It is ideal for refinishing and protecting industrial, construction, and agricultural equipment, as well as structural steel, piping, and other metal surfaces. The product is suitable for use in USDA-inspected facilities and offers excellent block resistance, fast handling times, and a high-gloss finish.

System Components:

Kem® 4000 can be used as a single-coat system for light-duty applications or as part of a multi-coat system for enhanced durability. It may be modified with Acrylic Modifier V70V00411 (10% by volume) for improved exterior gloss and block resistance. For increased chemical and abrasion resistance, and better color and gloss retention, it can be catalyzed with Exterior Catalyst V66V01020 at an 8:1 ratio (base to catalyst). Once catalyzed, the pot life is 8 hours maximum.

Applications:

Kem® 4000 is recommended for use on properly prepared steel, galvanized steel, and aluminum surfaces. Typical applications include:

- Machinery and equipment

- Bar joists and steel supports

- Steel doors and decking

- Farm equipment

- Piping and general metal structures

Application Details:

- Surface Preparation: All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants. Steel should be cleaned to SSPC-SP2 or preferably SSPC-SP6/NACE 3. Aluminum and galvanized surfaces require solvent cleaning per SSPC-SP1 and may require a primer.

- Primers:

- Steel: Kem Bond HS Primer or Kem Kromik Universal Metal Primer

- Aluminum: DTM Wash Primer or Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Primer

- Galvanized Steel: DTM Wash Primer, Galvite HS, or Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Primer

- Base Coat: One or two coats of Kem® 4000 depending on service level

- Top Coat: Not required unless part of a multi-coat system; Kem® 4000 serves as both base and finish coat

- Application Methods: Airless spray, conventional spray, HVLP, brush, or roller

- Recommended Film Thickness:

- Wet: 4.0–5.0 mils

- Dry: 1.9–2.4 mils

- Coverage: 313–396 sq. ft. per gallon at recommended thickness; theoretical coverage is 753 sq. ft. per gallon at 1 mil dry

- Drying Times at 77°F and 50% RH:

- To touch: 20 minutes

- Tack-free: 60 minutes

- Block resistant: 6 hours

- Recoat window: Less than 2 hours or more than 24 hours

- Full cure: 7 days

- Pot Life (when catalyzed): 8 hours

- Temperature Range for Application: 40°F to 120°F (4.4°C to 49°C), with surface at least 5°F above dew point

- Humidity Limit: Maximum 85% RH

- Reducers:

- Below 80°F: Xylene (R2K4) or Toluene (R2K1)

- Above 80°F: Aromatic Naphtha (R2K5) or 150 Flash Naphtha (R2KT4)

- Reduction: 10–15% by volume recommended for spray applications

Special Notes:

- Kem® 4000 is not compliant with VOC regulations in regions such as OTC, SCAQMD, CARB, and Canada.

- The product is not UV stable and may require additional protection or modification for prolonged exterior exposure.

- During early curing stages (first 16–24 hours), the coating is sensitive to moisture, dew, and high humidity.

- Excessive reduction can negatively impact film build, appearance, and adhesion.

- For best results, stripe coat welds and sharp angles, and use a 50% overlap during spray application to avoid holidays and pinholes.

- Do not use interior-only colorants for exterior applications.

- Clean tools and equipment with compliant solvents immediately after use.

Kem® 4000 is a versatile and durable enamel coating system that can be tailored with modifiers and catalysts for enhanced performance in demanding industrial environments.
