Description

Designed for use over iron and steel substrates, Kem Kromik® Universal Metal Primer can be used as a universal primer under high-performance topcoats. Suitable as a barrier coat over conventional coatings which would normally be attacked by strong solvents in high-performance coatings.

Material Name:

Kem Kromik® Universal Metal Primer (B50NZ0006 Brown, B50WZ0001 Off White, B50AZ0006 Gray)

Material Use:

Kem Kromik® Universal Metal Primer is a high-performance, rust-inhibiting primer formulated with a modified phenolic alkyd resin. It is designed for use on properly prepared iron and steel substrates and serves as a universal primer compatible with a wide range of high-performance topcoats. It is particularly effective as a barrier coat over existing coatings that may be sensitive to strong solvents, making it ideal for maintenance and industrial applications.

System Components:

This primer is typically used as the first coat in a multi-layer protective system. It is compatible with a variety of topcoats, including epoxies, polyurethanes, alkyds, and acrylics. A standard system includes:

- Primer: 1 coat of Kem Kromik® Universal Metal Primer

- Topcoats (2 coats recommended): Options include:

- Acrolon 218 HS Polyurethane

- Hi-Solids Polyurethane

- Macropoxy 646 Epoxy

- Macropoxy HS Epoxy

- Tile-Clad HS Epoxy

- Pro Industrial Waterbased Epoxy

- Pro Industrial Acrylic

- Pro Industrial Multi-Surface Acrylic

- Pro Industrial Pre-Catalyzed Epoxy & Urethane

- Pro Industrial Urethane Alkyd Enamel

- Sher-Cryl

- Silver-Brite Aluminum

- Steel Master 9500

- Industrial Enamel

- Metalatex Semi-Gloss Enamel

Applications:

Kem Kromik® is suitable for both interior and exterior metal surfaces and is commonly used in:

- Structural steel

- Machinery

- Storage tanks

- Marine vessels

- Steel piping

- Bar joists

- Handrails

- Shopcoat and maintenance primer applications

- Ductile iron pipe and fittings (atmospheric service)

Application Details:

- Surface Preparation: Steel surfaces should be cleaned to SSPC-SP6/NACE 3 (commercial blast cleaning) for optimal performance. For previously painted surfaces, ensure the coating is sound, clean, and dull before application. For ductile iron, follow NAPF standards for cleaning and blasting.

- Application Methods: Airless spray (1800–3000 psi, 0.015–0.019" tip), conventional spray, brush (natural bristle), or roller (3/8" solvent-resistant woven cover).

- Film Thickness:

- Wet: 6.0–8.0 mils

- Dry: 3.2–4.2 mils

- Coverage: 202–265 sq. ft. per gallon at recommended thickness; theoretical coverage is 850 sq. ft. per gallon at 1 mil dry.

- Pot Life: Not applicable (single-component product).

- Drying Times at 6.0 mils wet, 50% RH:

- Touch: 15 min (at 110°F), 30 min (at 77°F), 2 hrs (at 40°F)

- Tack-free: 20 min (110°F), 1 hr (77°F), 2.5 hrs (40°F)

- Recoat with itself or alkyds: 45 min (110°F), 1 hr (77°F), 2.5 hrs (40°F)

- Recoat with high-performance coatings: 16 hrs (77°F), up to 36 hrs (40°F)

- Recoat with acrylic latex: 48–72 hrs

- Full cure: 7 days

- Temperature & Humidity Limits:

- Application temperature: 40°F (min) to 120°F (max)

- Surface must be at least 5°F above dew point

- Relative humidity: Max 85%

- VOC Content: 408 g/L (3.40 lbs/gal)

- Finish: Flat

- Color Options: Brown, Off White, Gray

- Shelf Life: 36 months (unopened)

Special Notes:

- This primer is not suitable for immersion service or exposure to strong acids, alkalis, or solvents.

- It is not UV stable on its own and should be topcoated with a UV-resistant or UV-stable finish for exterior applications.

- Do not tint this product.

- For best results, stripe coat welds, crevices, and sharp edges to prevent early failure.

- When used as a barrier coat over existing coatings, always test a small area for adhesion and compatibility before full application.

- Clean tools and equipment with compliant solvents such as Xylene or R2K4 immediately after use.

- This product is MPI approved but does not meet LEED® VOC or emissions standards.

Kem Kromik® Universal Metal Primer is a versatile and durable solution for protecting steel substrates in industrial, marine, and commercial environments. Its compatibility with a wide range of topcoats makes it an excellent choice for both new construction and maintenance projects.
