Description

Low Modulus, Toughened Epoxy Binder for Mortars, Concretes and Overlays

Material Use:

KEMKO 047 is a two-component, low modulus, solvent-free epoxy binder specifically designed for exterior concrete repair and protection. It is primarily used as a binder for repair mortars and concretes, overlays, joint nosing, and aggregate broadcast systems. The product is toughened for mechanical shock resistance and is compliant with ASTM C881, Type III, Grade 1.

System Components:

This binder is used in conjunction with high silica sand or dense graded aggregates for forming mortars, overlays, and concretes. It can also be used in multiple layer broadcast systems and slurry applications. The material is designed for high aggregate loading and is freeze-thaw resistant. The binder system includes a resin (Part A) and a hardener (Part B), mixed at a 2:1 ratio by volume.

Applications:

Ideal for protecting concrete surfaces, rebuilding damaged joint nosing, repairing spalls, and replacing deteriorated concrete. It is also suitable for bonding flexible elastomers to rigid substrates and applications requiring resistance to automotive and aircraft fluids, as well as pavement deicing chemicals. It can be applied on concrete, masonry, stone, steel, wood, FRP, and flexible elastomers.

Application Details:

·      Surface Preparation: Substrates must be sound and clean, prepared per ASTM D4259 or ACI 503R, Chapter 5.

·      Priming: Prime substrate with mixed binder at 8–10 mils (100–125 sq ft/gal).

·      Mortars/Concretes: Apply mortar while primer is still tacky, thickness up to 1½ inches per lift.

·      Multiple Layer Broadcasts: First coat at 45 sq ft/gal; second coat at 30 sq ft/gal. Aggregate broadcast at 8–10 lb/sq yd and 12–14 lb/sq yd respectively.

·      Slurry Coats: Apply 3/8 inch thick with 1 part binder to 2–2.5 parts aggregate; broadcast additional aggregate at 10–14 lb/sq yd.

Special Notes:

·      Environmental Limits: Minimum substrate temperature for application is 35°F. Apply after daily peak temperature.

·      Pot Life: 30 minutes (1 quart at 73°F).

·      Curing Time: 2–5 hours per coat in broadcast systems; 6–8 hours for slurry coats before opening to traffic.

·      UV Resistance: Does not embrittle under long-term UV exposure.

·      Coverage: Varies with application and aggregate; primer coat covers 100–125 sq ft/gal; other layers have specific coverage rates.

·      Thickness Limits: Up to 1½ inches per lift for mortar/concrete.

·      Chemical Resistance: Resistant to deicing chemicals and most automotive/aircraft fluids; limited resistance to hydrocarbon solvents.

·      Color: Clear amber standard; custom colors available.

·      Shelf Life: Minimum three years in unopened containers (50–90°F storage).
