Description
Epoxy Binder for Decorative Aggregate Surfacings
KEMKO 157 DA is a two-component, solvent-free epoxy resin system used primarily as a clear primer and binder for decorative aggregate surfacings. It is also used for non-conductive flooring applications when combined with 3M Colorquartz aggregate. Common installations include patios, pool decks, walkways, stair risers, driveways, and prefabricated decorative panels in residential, commercial, and institutional settings.
· Primer/Base Coat: Neat binder (KEMKO 157) applied at 8–10 mils (160–200 sq ft/gal)
· Aggregate: Recommended size minimum 1/8 x 1/16 inch (#6 x 12 mesh). Marble chips or other decorative aggregates are suitable depending on application.
· Binder Layer: Mixed binder with aggregate, loading from 150 to 220 lb of aggregate per gallon of binder, depending on aggregate size.
· Topcoat (Optional for UV Protection): UV-resistant acrylic or polyurethane emulsion concrete/terrazzo sealers.
KEMKO 157 is used for decorative and functional surfacing where wear resistance, impact resistance, slip resistance, and water drainage are critical. Suitable for both interior and exterior environments when paired with a proper UV-resistant topcoat.
· Installation Temperature: Minimum 45°F, maximum 90°F (substrate temperature)
· Pot Life (Gel Time): Approx. 38 minutes at 73°F
· Curing Time:
o Light foot traffic: after 48 hours
o Heavy foot/light vehicular traffic: after 7 days
o Topcoat application: after 48 hours
· Mixing Ratio: 2:1 by volume (Resin Part A: Hardener Part B)
· Viscosity (Mixed): Approx. 1150 cp
· Coverage:
o Primer: 160–200 sq ft/gal (8–10 mils)
o Binder: Varies based on aggregate loading
· Thickness: Dependent on aggregate size, typical thickness ranges from 3/8 to 1-1/2 inch for the full surfacing system
· UV Resistance: Not UV stable by itself; exposure to UV causes gloss loss and whitening. Requires periodic UV-resistant topcoat for exterior use.
· Surface Conditions: Can be applied on both dry and damp substrates (free of standing water)
· The material must not be thinned with solvents.
· Suitable for insulating floors in power substations when used with proper aggregates.
· Aggregate should not be clear or white for exterior applications due to UV-induced discoloration of the binder.
· Proper surface preparation is critical to bonding and longevity of the system.
· Installation methods may include screeding, raking, and troweling; recommended to apply the aggregate mix while primer is still wet.
