Description

Elastomeric, Polyurea Membrane

Material Use:

KEMKO 181 Polyurea Membrane is a two-component, solvent-free, elastomeric polyurea resin and hardener system. It is supplied in standard units of 2, 10, and 100 gallons, with a 1:1 mix ratio by volume.

This material is designed primarily as a waterproof membrane for concrete slabs and decks, and as a corrosion-resistant coating or lining for chemical containment. It also functions as an elastomeric grout for non-structural cracks, saw cuts, and control joints in concrete. Its properties make it ideal for use in both interior and exterior environments.

System Components:

The system consists of Part A (polyurethane resin) and Part B (amine hardener). It is self-priming on most dry and damp substrates; however, for maximum bond strength, priming is recommended. When additional performance is required, an epoxy/aggregate wearing course may be applied over the membrane once it is tack-free. Aggregate can also be broadcast into the wet membrane for enhanced surface texture or mechanical bond.

Applications:

KEMKO 181 is applicable on concrete, asphalt, steel, and wood, including damp surfaces (not wet). It is particularly suited for applications requiring fast curing, chemical and abrasion resistance, such as vehicular decks, pedestrian surfaces, chemical containment areas, and joints or cracks in concrete.

Application Details:

·      Mixing: Components must be mixed at 1:1 ratio using a low-speed drill with a Jiffy mixer blade. The pot life is short—about 5–7 minutes.

·      Installation Temperature: Minimum substrate temperature is 40°F for manual and 35°F for spray applications.

·      Cure Conditions: Thin film touch dry in 0.5 hours, hard dry in 2 hours, and gel time is approximately 12 minutes at 73°F.

·      Thickness: Typical application thickness ranges from 15 to 60 mils. For pedestrian surfaces, 30 mils is standard; for vehicular surfaces, 60 mils. Membrane thickness may be halved when topped with an epoxy/aggregate wearing course.

·      Coverage: At 15 mils, 1 gallon covers approximately 107 sq. ft.; at 60 mils, approximately 27 sq. ft.

·      Surface Preparation: Must be sound, dry or damp (not wet), and free of contaminants. Follow ASTM D 4259 or ACI 503R for surface prep.

·      Recoating: May be done as soon as the surface is tack-free, typically 30 minutes at 73°F.

Special Notes:

·      This material is UV resistant—it does not degrade or embrittle from sunlight exposure but may chalk, lose gloss, and fade.

·      It is resistant to deicing chemicals, vehicle fluids, and mild aqueous chemicals, though not to hydrocarbon solvents.

·      Not recommended on substrates without a vapor barrier or subject to hydrostatic pressure.

·      Minimum cure temperature is 35°F.

·      Safety precautions include using adequate ventilation and protective gear due to health hazards associated with Part B (amine hardener).
