Description
For Moisture Vapor Reduction of On-Grade Concrete Floors
KEMKO 246 MVR Primer is a two-component, solvent-free, low viscosity epoxy primer specifically designed to address high moisture vapor transmission (MVT) in on-grade concrete slabs. It is applied as a prime coat prior to the installation of impervious floor coatings or coverings such as carpet, vinyl tiles, or wood, especially where MVT rates exceed 3 lbs./1000 ft²/24 hr as per ASTM F1869.
This primer is typically used as the foundational layer in a flooring system where urethanes, epoxies, polymeric coatings, or flooring adhesives are to be applied over concrete. The primer is mixed at a 2:1 volume ratio (Part A:Part B) and can be followed by various compatible topcoats or adhesives, provided they are applied once the primer has reached a set but tacky condition.
It is primarily used on dry or damp concrete slabs on grade, both above and below grade, to reduce MVT from levels as high as 15 lbs./1000 ft²/24 hr to below the 3 lb. threshold. Its high bond strength and fast cure make it ideal for rapid flooring installations in commercial and industrial environments.
The material should be applied at a recommended thickness of 15 mils using a 3/32” notched squeegee followed by a 3/8” nap roller for back rolling. Coverage is approximately 95–120 square feet per gallon, depending on surface porosity. It sets in 10–12 hours at 73°F, with faster times at higher temperatures (8 hours at 90°F) and slower at lower (12 hours at 50°F). The substrate must be a minimum of 10 days old, sound, and free of contaminants, with a minimum temperature of 50°F at application. For cure times over 24 hours before topcoating, it is recommended to broadcast kiln-dried aggregate to improve adhesion.
KEMKO 246 is non-VOC, has very low odor, and is resistant to many deicing and vehicular chemicals but has limited resistance to hydrocarbon solvents. It is not a substitute for a vapor barrier membrane. The product is not UV stable and should be protected from direct sunlight. The shelf life is at least one year when stored in unopened containers between 60–90°F. Always conduct a bond strength test if using with third-party adhesives or coatings.
