Description
Methyl Hydrate is used to thin Shellac based products only. It is used as a fuel for alcohol stoves.
It can dissolve most types of inks, gums, lipstick, crayons and many other stains. It is used also as a fondue fuel. It cleans windows, when mixed with water.
Best for Preventing Gas Line Freezing.
- It has a low freeze point which makes it suitable for many de-icing applications.
- Removes ice buildup on windows, locks and other surfaces.
Material Use:
Methanol is a high-purity, industrial-grade chemical used primarily in the organic chemical industry. It functions as a solvent, fuel, antifreeze, and chemical feedstock. Specific construction-related uses include functioning as a cleaner for painting equipment, a thinner for certain paint products, and as a de-icing agent to prevent frozen fuel lines in equipment during winter. It can also serve as a primer fuel for lamps, heaters, blow torches, and for blending into windshield washer fluids and fuel treatment products.
System Components:
This product is a standalone liquid chemical and is not indicated to be used as part of a system with other coatings or construction materials in the TDS. However, it may be used in conjunction with paint systems for thinning and cleaning purposes.
Applications:
- Paint thinner and equipment cleaner
- Fuel system antifreeze (gas line de-icing)
- Primer fuel for lanterns and heaters
- Windshield washer fluid component
- Additive in fuel treatments

- Handling: Use in accordance with safety standards and consult the Methanol MSDS for detailed protective measures.
- UV Stability: Not specified; typically not UV stable.
- Environmental Limits: While specific humidity and temperature ranges for application are not detailed, care should be taken due to its flammable nature and low boiling point.
- Coverage & Thickness: Not applicable for this solvent material as it is not applied as a coating or patching product.
This methanol product is primarily supportive in construction settings where cleaning, thinning, or de-icing is required, rather than as a direct coating or structural material.
