Description
Pro Industrial™ DTM Wash Primer is a water-based wash primer designed to be applied over aluminum and galvanizing, or used as a tie-coat over zinc-rich primers. Accepts high performance "hot" solvent topcoats directly, such as epoxies and urethanes.
Material Use:
Pro Industrial™ DTM Wash Primer is a water-based, single-component wash primer designed for direct-to-metal (DTM) applications. It is specifically formulated to promote adhesion on non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, galvanized steel, stainless steel, and as a tie-coat over zinc-rich primers. This primer is ideal for use in commercial and industrial environments where high-performance solvent-based topcoats such as epoxies and urethanes will be applied.
System Components:
This primer is typically used as the first coat in a multi-layer coating system. It must be topcoated and does not provide significant corrosion protection on its own. Recommended topcoats include:
- Pro Industrial Acrylic (Base and Finish Coat)
- Acrolon 218 HS Polyurethane
- Macropoxy HS Epoxy
- Pro Industrial DTM Acrylic
- Pro Industrial Waterbased Acrolon 100
- Pro Industrial Industrial Enamel HS
- Pro Industrial Waterbased Epoxy
- Pro Industrial Waterbased Alkyd-Urethane
- Pro Industrial Multi-Surface Acrylic
- Pro Industrial Pre-Catalyzed Epoxy
- Pro Industrial Pre-Catalyzed Urethane
Applications:
This primer is suitable for use on:
- Aluminum
- Galvanized steel
- Stainless steel
- Zinc-rich primers
- Steel (when used over a zinc-rich primer)
It is also suitable for USDA-inspected facilities, making it appropriate for food processing and other hygienic environments.
Application Details:
- Application Method: Spray only (airless or conventional). Brush and roller are not recommended except for touch-up.
- Recommended Wet Film Thickness (WFT): 3.4–6.4 mils
- Recommended Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 0.7–1.4 mils
- Coverage: 251–502 sq. ft. per gallon depending on film thickness; theoretical coverage is 352 sq. ft. per gallon at 1 mil DFT.
- Pot Life: Not applicable (single-component)
- Dry Time @ 77°F / 50% RH:
- To touch: 2 hours
- To handle: 2 hours
- To recoat: 2 hours
- Full cure: 7 days
- Dry Time @ 50°F:
- To touch: 3 hours
- To handle: 3 hours
- To recoat: 6 hours
- Full cure: 7 days
- Dry Time @ 110°F:
- To touch: 1 hour
- To handle: 1 hour
- To recoat: 1 hour
- Full cure: 3 days
- Temperature Range for Application: Minimum 50°F (10°C), Maximum 110°F (49°C); surface must be at least 5°F above dew point.
- Relative Humidity Limit: Maximum 85%
- VOC Content: 97 g/L (0.81 lbs/gal)
- Volume Solids: 21 ±2%
- Weight Solids: 30 ±2%
- Weight per Gallon: 9.30 lbs
Special Notes:
- This primer must be topcoated and is not intended to be used as a standalone corrosion protection system.
- It is not suitable for application over heavily blasted metal due to its low solids content, which cannot adequately fill blast profiles.
- Not recommended for use over chemical treatments on steel, galvanized steel, or aluminum, as this may result in adhesion failure.
- Surface preparation is critical. For aluminum and galvanized steel, clean per SSPC-SP1. For galvanized surfaces treated with chromates or silicates, a test patch is recommended. If adhesion is poor, brush blasting per SSPC-SP16 is required.
- For steel, a zinc-rich primer should be applied first, followed by this wash primer and then the topcoat.
- The product is not UV-stable on its own and must be topcoated with a UV-resistant or UV-stable finish coat.
- Shelf life is 36 months in unopened containers.
- Clean tools and equipment with soap and warm water immediately after use. Flush spray equipment with a compliant solvent to prevent rusting.
System Example for Galvanized Steel:
1. Surface Preparation: SSPC-SP1 or brush blast if chromates/silicates are present.
2. Primer: 1 coat Pro Industrial DTM Wash Primer
3. Base Coat: 1 coat Pro Industrial Acrylic
4. Finish Coat: 1 coat Pro Industrial Acrylic
System Example for Steel:
1. Surface Preparation: SSPC-SP1 and apply Zinc Clad Primer
2. Tie-Coat: 1 coat Pro Industrial DTM Wash Primer
3. Base Coat: 1 coat Pro Industrial Acrylic
4. Finish Coat: 1 coat Pro Industrial Acrylic
This primer is a versatile component in multi-coat systems for metal substrates, offering excellent adhesion promotion and compatibility with a wide range of high-performance topcoats.
