Description

A high-solids, low-VOC, heavy metal-free primer, Pro Industrial™ Kem Bond HS Universal Metal Primer can be top coated with alkyd, acrylic and high-performance coatings. Also suitable as a "barrier" coat over conventional coatings which would normally be attacked by strong solvents in high-performance coatings.

Material Use:

Pro Industrial™ Kem Bond HS® is a high-solids, fast-drying, rust-inhibitive phenolic alkyd primer designed for use on properly prepared steel surfaces. It serves as a universal metal primer that can be topcoated with a wide range of alkyd, acrylic, epoxy, and urethane coatings. It is suitable for both interior and exterior applications and is often used in industrial and commercial environments where corrosion resistance and compatibility with high-performance topcoats are required.

System Components:

This primer is typically used as the first coat in a multi-layer protective system. It is compatible with a wide range of Sherwin-Williams topcoats, including:

- Acrolon 218 HS Polyurethane

- Hi-Solids Polyurethane

- Macropoxy 646 and Macropoxy HS Epoxies

- Pro Industrial Acrylic

- Pro Industrial Waterbased Epoxy

- Pro Industrial Waterbased Alkyd-Urethane

- Pro Industrial Multi-Surface Acrylic

- Pro Industrial Pre-Catalyzed Epoxy & Urethane

- Pro Industrial Urethane Alkyd Enamel

- Pro Industrial Waterbased Acrolon 100

- Pro Industrial Sher-Cryl

- Pro Industrial Silver-Brite Aluminum

- Pro Industrial Industrial Enamel

Applications:

Kem Bond HS is recommended for use on steel substrates in a variety of industrial and commercial applications, including:

- Structural steel

- Handrails

- Storage tanks

- Machinery

- Steel piping

- Bar joists

- Marine applications (non-immersion)

Application Details:

- Surface Preparation: Minimum SSPC-SP2 (Hand Tool Clean); for optimal performance, SSPC-SP6/NACE 3 (Commercial Blast Cleaning) is recommended. Prime bare steel within 8 hours of preparation to prevent flash rusting.

- Application Methods: Airless spray (1800 psi, 0.017–0.019" tip), brush (natural bristle), or roller (¼–⅜" solvent-resistant woven cover). Conventional spray is not recommended.

- Film Thickness: 3.0–8.0 wet mils (WFT), 1.8–4.8 dry mils (DFT)

- Coverage: 200–534 sq. ft. per gallon depending on film thickness; theoretical coverage is 962 sq. ft. per gallon at 1 mil DFT.

- Pot Life: Not applicable (single-component)

- Dry Time @ 77°F, 50% RH, 4.0 mils WFT:

- To touch: 30 minutes

- Tack-free: 1 hour

- Recoat with alkyds: 2 hours

- Recoat with acrylics: 24 hours

- Recoat with epoxies/urethanes: 24 hours

- Full cure: 2 days

- Temperature Range for Application: 40°F (4.4°C) to 120°F (49°C), with surface at least 5°F above dew point

- Humidity Limit: Maximum 85% RH

- VOC: 335 g/L (2.79 lbs/gal)

- Volume Solids: 60 ±2%

- Weight Solids: 79 ±2%

- Weight per Gallon: 13.24 lbs

- Flash Point: 71°F (TCC)

Special Notes:

- This primer is not suitable for immersion service or exposure to strong acids, alkalis, or solvents.

- It is not UV-stable on its own and should be topcoated with a UV-resistant or UV-stable finish for exterior exposure.

- Do not tint this product.

- Clean tools and equipment with compliant solvents such as xylene (R2K4). Follow all safety precautions due to the flammability and spontaneous combustion risk of solvent-soaked materials.

- The product is compliant with OTC and Canadian regulations but does not meet stricter VOC limits such as SCAQMD or LEED v4 requirements.

- Shelf life is 36 months in unopened containers.

System Recommendation Example:

For a durable, corrosion-resistant steel coating system in an industrial setting:

1. Prime with 1 coat of Pro Industrial Kem Bond HS at 4.0 mils WFT.

2. Topcoat with 2 coats of Macropoxy 646 Epoxy or Acrolon 218 HS Polyurethane, depending on desired finish and chemical resistance.

This system provides excellent adhesion, corrosion resistance, and compatibility with high-performance coatings, making it ideal for structural steel, machinery, and marine environments (non-immersion).
