Description

Designed for use over iron and steel substrates, Pro Industrial™ Kem Kromik® Universal Metal Primer can be used as a universal primer under high-performance topcoats. Suitable as a barrier coat over conventional coatings which would normally be attacked by strong solvents in high-performance coatings.

Material Use:

Pro Industrial™ Kem Kromik® Universal Metal Primer is a high-performance, rust-inhibiting primer formulated with a modified phenolic alkyd resin. It is specifically designed for use over iron and steel substrates and serves as a universal primer compatible with a wide range of high-performance topcoats. It is ideal for both interior and exterior applications and can also function as a barrier coat over existing coatings that may be sensitive to strong solvents.

System Components:

This primer is typically used as the first coat in a multi-layer protective system for metal surfaces. It is compatible with a wide range of Sherwin-Williams topcoats, including:

- Acrolon 218 HS Polyurethane

- Hi-Solids Polyurethane

- Macropoxy 646 Epoxy

- Macropoxy HS Epoxy

- Pro Industrial Acrylic

- Pro Industrial Waterbased Epoxy

- Pro Industrial Waterbased Alkyd-Urethane

- Pro Industrial Multi-Surface Acrylic

- Pro Industrial Pre-Catalyzed Epoxy & Urethane

- Pro Industrial Urethane Alkyd Enamel

- Pro Industrial Waterbased Acrolon 100

- Pro Industrial Sher-Cryl

- Pro Industrial Silver-Brite Aluminum

- Pro Industrial Industrial Enamel

Applications:

This primer is recommended for use on properly prepared steel surfaces in a variety of industrial and commercial settings. Typical applications include:

- Structural steel

- Handrails

- Bar joists

- Storage tanks

- Machinery

- Steel piping

- Marine vessels

- Ductile iron pipe and fittings (atmospheric service)

- Previously painted metal surfaces (as a barrier coat)

Application Details:

- Surface Preparation: Steel surfaces should be cleaned to SSPC-SP2 (Hand Tool Clean) at minimum, with SSPC-SP6/NACE 3 (Commercial Blast Cleaning) recommended for optimal performance. All oil and grease must be removed per SSPC-SP1. Previously painted surfaces must be sound, clean, and dull. For ductile iron, follow NAPF standards for cleaning and blasting.

- Application Methods: Can be applied by airless spray (1800–3000 psi, 0.015–0.019" tip), conventional spray, brush (natural bristle), or roller (3/8" woven with solvent-resistant core).

- Film Thickness: Apply at 6.0–8.0 wet mils to achieve 3.2–4.2 dry mils.

- Coverage: 202–265 sq. ft. per gallon at recommended thickness. Theoretical coverage is 850 sq. ft. per gallon at 1 mil dry film.

- Drying Times at 6.0 mils wet, 50% RH:

- Touch: 30 minutes @ 77°F

- Tack-free: 1 hour @ 77°F

- Recoat with itself or alkyds: 1 hour @ 77°F

- Recoat with epoxies/urethanes: 16 hours @ 77°F

- Recoat with acrylic latex: 48–72 hours

- Full cure: 7 days

- Pot Life: Not applicable (single-component product)

- Temperature & Humidity Limits:

- Application temperature: 40°F to 120°F (air, surface, and material)

- Must be at least 5°F above dew point

- Maximum relative humidity: 85%

- VOC Content: 3.44 lbs/gal (412 g/L) for Brown B50NZ0116

- Shelf Life: 36 months unopened

- Flash Point: 80°F PMCC

Special Notes:

- This primer is not recommended for immersion service or exposure to acids, alkalis, or strong solvents.

- It is not UV stable and should be topcoated for exterior exposure.

- Acts as a barrier coat to prevent lifting when applying strong solvent-based topcoats over sensitive or unknown existing coatings.

- For maximum adhesion with acrylic topcoats, allow 48–72 hours of drying time.

- Not compliant with VOC regulations in OTC, SCAQMD, CARB, or LEED v4 standards.

- Clean tools and equipment with compliant solvent immediately after use.

- Rags and waste soaked with this product may spontaneously combust; dispose of properly in a sealed, water-filled metal container.

This primer is best used as part of a complete Sherwin-Williams system for steel protection, especially in industrial and marine environments where corrosion resistance and compatibility with high-performance topcoats are critical.
