High-Build, Chemical, Corrosion and Abrasion Resistant Liquid-Applied Polyurethane Coating and Lining
- Liquid polyurethane, able to be applied to complex details, penetrations and irregular shapes within tanks.
- Adheres to and bridges between common construction materials such as concrete and steel.
- Forms a tough but elastomeric coating able to bridge cracks and joints.
Material Use:
Sikagard E.W.L. is a two-component, high-build, polyurethane-based, liquid-applied elastomeric coating. It is formulated specifically for water and wastewater applications, including potable water tanks, offering robust protection against chemical, corrosion, temperature, and abrasion stresses.
System Components:
- Base Coat and Final Coat: Sikagard® E.W.L. is applied in at least two coats to achieve a total thickness of 60 mils wet film thickness (w.f.t.).
- Primers:
- Sika® MT Primer: For porous substrates subject to outgassing or metals after blast-cleaning.
- Sikagard®-75 EpoCemCA: For levelling, sealing blowholes, or acting as a temporary moisture barrier.
- Bonding Agent: Sikagard® E.W.L. Bonding Agent is recommended over metals and existing coatings to enhance adhesion.
Applications:
- Tank lining and repairs
- Reservoir coating
- Joint sealing
- Chemical containment structures
Application Details:
- Surface Preparation:
- Concrete: CSP 4-6 profile, minimum compressive strength 20 MPa.
- Steel: SSPC-SP10/NACE No. 2 or SP6/NACE No. 3 depending on immersion use.
- Mixing: Mechanically mix only; mix ratio is 6.2:1 by weight, 7.8:1 by volume.
- Application Method: Trowel, roller, squeegee, or spray. Must be applied in two coats at 30 mil w.f.t. each (total 60 mils).
- Coverage: Approx. 50 ft²/US gal at 30 mils w.f.t.
- Recoating Window: Within 4 hours of initial coat or surface must be abraded.
Special Notes:
- Pot Life: ~30 minutes depending on temperature and method.
- Curing Time:
- Potable water use: 2 weeks @ 60 mils @ 15 °C (60 °F)
- Other uses: Minimum 24 hours
- Temperature Limits:
- Application: Material and substrate must be ≥ 15 °C (60 °F), substrate ≥ 10 °C (50 °F), and ≥ 3 °C above dew point.
- Service: -51 °C to 104 °C (-60 °F to 220 °F)
- UV Resistance: UV stable, though gloss fades to matte in 3–6 months.
- VOC Content: 90 g/L (0.75 lb/US gal.)
- Thickness Limits: Recommended total wet film thickness is 60 mils.
- Wet Film Coverage: 50 ft²/US gal at 30 mils w.f.t.
- Elastomeric Performance: Crack bridging >3 mm at -26 °C, >6 mm after heat aging.
- Storage: Component A: 2 years; Component B: 6 months under specified conditions.
Sikagard® E.W.L. is best applied by trained professionals and is compliant with ANSI/NSF 61 for potable water up to 82 °C (180 °F), making it suitable for health-sensitive environments like fish hatcheries and food processing plants.
