Material Use:
SOPRA-FOIL M2M and M2V are high-performance reflective insulation vapour barriers designed to enhance thermal performance in building envelopes. These materials are used to reduce radiant heat transfer and act as vapour barriers in wall, ceiling, and floor assemblies. SOPRA-FOIL M2M features a metallized polyethylene finish on both sides, while SOPRA-FOIL M2V has a metallized finish on one side and a white polyethylene finish on the other, allowing for specific placement depending on the application.
System Components:
These reflective insulation products are composed of two layers of air bubbles laminated between polyethylene sheets. The M2M version is metallized on both sides, while the M2V version has one metallized and one white side. They are typically installed with spacer or furring strips to create an air gap, which is essential for maximizing reflectivity and insulation performance. The system may also include compatible adhesive tapes or sealants to ensure airtight installation.
Applications:
SOPRA-FOIL M2M and M2V are suitable for use in residential, commercial, and industrial construction as part of wall, ceiling, and floor insulation systems. M2V is also approved for use under concrete slabs, with the white side facing upward. These materials are ideal for applications where radiant heat control and vapour barrier performance are required, such as in attics, crawl spaces, and behind cladding systems.
Application Details:
Installation involves fastening the insulation to the structure using staples, nails, double-sided tape, or construction adhesive. It is critical to maintain an air gap of 1.25 cm to 5 cm (0.5 in to 2 in) between the reflective surface and the adjacent material to ensure optimal performance. All seams and penetrations must be sealed with compatible tape or sealant to prevent air and moisture infiltration. SOPRA-FOIL must always be installed on the warmer side of the assembly. M2V can be used under slabs, laid with the white side up, and should be extended 150 to 200 mm (6 to 8 in) up the walls, with overlapped and sealed joints.
Special Notes:
- SOPRA-FOIL M2M should not be used under concrete slabs.
- These materials must not be installed in conjunction with other vapour barriers to avoid condensation issues.
- Service temperature range is from -45 °C to 82 °C (-50 °F to 180 °F).
- The product is non-conductive, does not promote fungal or bacterial growth, and has excellent fire performance with a flame spread rating of 0 and low smoke development.
- Reflectivity is rated at 0.93, and emittance at 0.069, per ASTM C1371.
- Water vapour permeance is 4 ng/Pa·s·m² (0.07 perm), making it an effective vapour barrier.
- Rolls must be stored upright in a dry, heated area to prevent condensation.
- No cracking was observed under pliability testing, and the product passed corrosivity testing at 93 °C (200 °F) for 7 days.
These materials are not part of a multi-layer liquid-applied system and do not require primers, base coats, or topcoats. They are standalone insulation and vapour barrier products used in conjunction with mechanical fasteners and air gap systems.
