Material Use:
SOPRA-XPS 25 CW is a rigid thermal insulation board made of extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam with closed-cell structure. It is primarily used as thermal insulation in above-grade wall assemblies, particularly in SOPREMA wall systems. The product is designed to provide high thermal resistance and moisture resistance, making it suitable for energy-efficient building envelopes.
System Components:
SOPRA-XPS 25 CW is typically used in conjunction with SOPREMA wall systems and may be paired with SOPRASEAL STICK FLASHPRO or ALL-WEATHER BUTYL FLASHING TAPE for sealing panel joints. These self-adhering membrane strips (100 mm or 4 in wide) are applied centered over the joints between insulation boards to enhance air and moisture sealing performance. A thermal barrier must be used in accordance with building code requirements due to the flammability of the product.
Applications:
This insulation board is intended for use in above-grade wall applications where thermal insulation is required. It is suitable for both commercial and residential construction and can be installed in cavity walls, exterior walls, and other vertical assemblies. It is not intended for use in load-bearing applications or where compressive loads exceed 20 psi.
Application Details:
SOPRA-XPS 25 CW is installed mechanically using fasteners and 50 mm (2 in) diameter washers. Fasteners should be placed 150 mm (6 in) apart along the board perimeter and 305 mm (12 in) on center both horizontally and vertically. When multiple layers are required, they should be installed with staggered joints to minimize thermal bridging. The boards are scored at 400 mm (16 in) and 600 mm (24 in) intervals to facilitate easy cutting and fitting between wall ties. The product is available in various thicknesses ranging from 40 mm (1.6 in) to 100 mm (3.9 in), with standard board dimensions of 2400 mm x 1200 mm (7.9 ft x 3.9 ft).
Special Notes:
- Thermal Resistance: R-5.0 per inch (RSI-0.88) at 25.4 mm (1 in) thickness. Long-term thermal resistance (LTTR) for 50 mm (2 in) thickness is RSI-1.62 (R-9.2).
- Compressive Strength: Minimum 172 kPa (25 psi), suitable for non-load-bearing wall applications.
- Water Absorption: Very low, with a maximum of 0.7% by volume (ASTM D2842) and 0.1% (ASTM C272).
- Water Vapour Permeance: 35 ng/Pa•s•m² (0.61 perm) at 25.4 mm thickness.
- Flame Spread Rating: Must be used with a thermal barrier to comply with building codes.
- UV Exposure Limit: Should not be exposed to UV rays for more than 60 days. If stored outdoors, the boards must be covered with an opaque protective cover.
- Service Temperature Limit: Maximum service temperature is 75 °C (167 °F).
- Environmental Impact: Contains no CFCs, HCFCs, or HFC-134a. Zero ozone depletion potential and very low global warming potential (GWP of 1). GREENGUARD GOLD certified for indoor air quality.
- Storage and Handling: Store flat in original packaging. If packaging is removed, protect from UV and weather. Keep away from flames and high heat sources due to flammability.
SOPRA-XPS 25 CW is a high-performance insulation solution that integrates well into SOPREMA wall systems, offering excellent thermal efficiency, moisture resistance, and ease of installation. It is best suited for vertical wall applications in both new construction and retrofit projects.
