Material Use:
SOPRA-XPS 35 is a rigid thermal insulation board made of extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam, designed primarily for use in protected-membrane roofing systems (inverted roofs). It provides high-performance thermal insulation and is suitable for use in commercial and residential roofing applications where long-term insulation performance and moisture resistance are critical.
System Components:
SOPRA-XPS 35 is typically used as part of a protected-membrane roofing system, where it is installed above the waterproofing membrane and below the ballast layer (such as pavers, gravel, or vegetated systems). It may be used in conjunction with compatible adhesives (when temporary bonding is required) and drainage panels. The insulation boards are available with either shiplap or square edges and come in various thicknesses ranging from 25 mm (1 in) to 102 mm (4 in), with other sizes available upon request.
Applications:
SOPRA-XPS 35 is intended for use in roofing systems, particularly inverted or protected-membrane roofs. It is suitable for both new construction and retrofit projects. The product is ideal for applications requiring high compressive strength, low water absorption, and long-term thermal resistance. It is also compliant with environmental standards, making it suitable for sustainable building projects.
Application Details:
SOPRA-XPS 35 is installed using a loose-laid method. Boards are placed flat on the roof surface, and if multiple layers are required, they should be installed with staggered joints without adhesion between layers. The printed side of the board must face the substrate. If temporary adhesion is needed, only adhesives compatible with extruded polystyrene should be used. The boards must be covered with ballast immediately after installation to prevent heat buildup and UV degradation. The maximum service temperature is 75 °C (167 °F), and the product should not be exposed to UV rays for more than 60 days.
Special Notes:
- Thermal Resistance: R-5.0 per inch (RSI 0.88) at 24 °C (75 °F); long-term thermal resistance (LTTR) for 2 in thickness is RSI 1.66 (R-9.4).
- Compressive Strength: Minimum 241 kPa (35 psi), suitable for high-load applications.
- Water Absorption: Very low, with a maximum of 0.1% by volume (ASTM C272).
- Flame Spread Rating: < 500 (CAN/ULC-S102.2).
- Environmental Compliance: Contains no CFCs, HCFCs, or HFC-134a; zero ozone depletion potential; low global warming potential (GWP of 1); GREENGUARD GOLD certified; low VOC emissions per CDPH V1.2.
- Storage and Handling: Must be stored flat in original packaging or under opaque cover if unpackaged. Protect from UV exposure and heat sources. Flammable—keep away from open flames.
- UV Exposure Limit: Maximum 60 days of direct exposure.
- Board Dimensions: Standard size is 2438 mm x 610 mm (8 ft x 2 ft).
- Installation Temperature Range: Not explicitly stated, but must be protected from high heat and UV during and after installation.
SOPRA-XPS 35 is a durable, high-performance insulation solution for inverted roofing systems, offering excellent thermal resistance, moisture resistance, and environmental safety. It must be used in accordance with SOPREMA guidelines to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
