SOPRABARRIER 20 and SOPRABARRIER 30 are root barriers composed of woven high density polyethylene scrim and provide the protection against roots on SOPRANATURE green roofs, roof gardens and plaza-decks.

Material Use:
SOPRABARRIER 20 and SOPRABARRIER 30 are high-performance root barrier membranes designed to prevent root penetration in green roofing systems. These products are composed of woven high-density polyethylene (HDPE) scrim and are specifically engineered to protect waterproofing assemblies from root intrusion in vegetated roof applications. SOPRABARRIER 20 is primarily used in extensive green roof systems and with TOUNDRA BOX modular systems, while SOPRABARRIER 30 is intended for more demanding applications such as semi-intensive, intensive, and urban agriculture green roofs.
System Components:
SOPRABARRIER 20 and 30 are typically used in conjunction with SOPRADRAIN drainage boards and insulation layers in green roof assemblies. They are installed directly beneath the drainage layer in conventional roofing systems or under insulation in protected membrane roof assemblies. The system includes sealing of overlaps using SOPREMA-approved tape or, in the case of SOPRABARRIER 30, optionally with a hot air welder for enhanced seam integrity.
Applications:
These root barriers are suitable for use in green roofs, roof gardens, and plaza decks where vegetation is present and root protection is required. SOPRABARRIER 20 is ideal for lightweight, low-maintenance extensive green roofs, while SOPRABARRIER 30 is suited for heavier, more complex vegetated systems that may include shrubs, trees, or food crops.
Application Details:
Installation involves unrolling the membrane directly under the drainage or insulation layer with a minimum overlap of 305 mm (12 inches). Seams must be sealed using SOPREMA-approved tape, ensuring the tape is centered over the joint. For SOPRABARRIER 30, seams may also be sealed using a hot air welder set at 220°C (428°F) with a 38 mm (1.5 in) flat tip. The product is flexible at low temperatures down to -30°C (-22°F), making it suitable for cold climate installations.
Special Notes:
- SOPRABARRIER 20 has a thickness of 0.50 mm (20 mil) and a roll weight of 50 kg (110 lb), while SOPRABARRIER 30 is 0.76 mm (30 mil) thick and weighs 55 kg (121 lb).
- Both products pass ANSI/GRHC/SPRI VR-1 root penetration resistance standards.
- They exhibit excellent mechanical properties including high puncture resistance and tear strength.
- These materials are not UV-stable and must be covered by other system components such as insulation or drainage boards.
- No specific pot life, curing time, or temperature range for application is required as these are sheet-applied physical barriers, not liquid-applied materials.
- Coverage is based on roll dimensions: each roll covers approximately 111 m² (1,195 ft²), not accounting for overlaps.
