Material Use:
SOPRAJOINT PLUS is a monolithic, flexible expansion joint system designed to provide complete waterproofing and accommodate multi-directional movement (horizontal, vertical, and shear) in building and civil engineering structures. It is particularly suited for use in structural expansion joints where movement and waterproofing are critical, such as in parking decks, bridges, podiums, and large commercial or industrial buildings.
System Components:
The SOPRAJOINT PLUS system is composed of a central expandable EPDM-based synthetic rubber core, reinforced with a stabilized oxidized polyacrylonitrile fabric, and flanked by two flanges coated on both the surface and underface. The system is custom-fabricated to required lengths and can be installed using various methods including heat-welding, cold-applied adhesives, hot bitumen, ALSAN RS liquid membranes, or self-adhesive membranes. For mechanical fastening (required for sizes 75, 100, and 125), SOPREMA Screws and Plates (50 mm plates) are used at 305 mm (12") on center.
Applications:
SOPRAJOINT PLUS is ideal for waterproofing expansion joints in horizontal and vertical applications across a wide range of construction types. It is suitable for use in concrete decks, roofing systems, podiums, and other structural elements requiring movement accommodation. The product can be adapted to complex geometries including 90-degree angles, T-junctions, curves, and cross-sections through a vulcanization process.
Application Details:
Installation begins by unrolling the SOPRAJOINT PLUS and positioning it over a pre-heated base sheet membrane using a propane torch. The joint is pressed into the liquefied bitumen to ensure adhesion. For larger sizes (75, 100, 125), mechanical fastening is required. A reinforcement strip (minimum 150 mm wide) must overlap the flange by 75 mm, followed by the application of a cap sheet membrane up to the edge of the core. It is recommended to install both base and cap sheet membranes on the same day to prevent moisture absorption by the geotextile. The product must be installed on a solid, smooth, and even surface; it is not suitable for uneven substrates like brick.
Special Notes:
- SOPRAJOINT PLUS is available in five sizes, each offering different movement capabilities:
- SOPRAJOINT PLUS 20: ±30 mm horizontal, ±25 mm vertical, ±20 mm shear
- SOPRAJOINT PLUS 40: ±60 mm horizontal, ±50 mm vertical, ±40 mm shear
- SOPRAJOINT PLUS 75: ±100 mm horizontal, ±85 mm vertical, ±75 mm shear
- SOPRAJOINT PLUS 100: ±150 mm horizontal, ±125 mm vertical, ±100 mm shear
- SOPRAJOINT PLUS 125: ±200 mm horizontal, ±170 mm vertical, ±125 mm shear
- The product has a nominal thickness of 2.5 mm (3/32 in) and a Shore A hardness of 45 ± 5.
- Tensile strength is 10 MPa, elongation at break exceeds 700%, and tear resistance is greater than 10 N/mm.
- SOPRAJOINT PLUS must be protected from prolonged exposure to mineral oils, fuels, benzene, and aromatic solvents like toluene.
- Store the product in a dry, covered area away from direct sunlight and damaging substances. If stored outdoors, use an opaque protective cover.
- The product is not UV-stable on its own and must be covered with a compatible cap sheet membrane for long-term exposure.
Environmental and Application Limitations:
- Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of dust or debris before installation.
- Installation should be avoided in wet or humid conditions to prevent moisture absorption by the geotextile.
- Temperature limitations for installation are not explicitly stated in the TDS, but standard bituminous membrane application guidelines (typically above 5°C) should be followed.
- The product is not designed for direct exposure and must be integrated into a waterproofing membrane system.
