Description
A heavy-duty, VOC-compliant protective topcoat, Steel-Master™ 9500 dries to a tough, flexible finish with very good gloss and color retention, and provides long-term exterior durability for a single-component alkyd product.
Material Use:
Steel Master™ 9500 is a high-performance, single-component, 30% silicone alkyd topcoat designed for both interior and exterior applications. It provides a tough, flexible, high-gloss finish with excellent color and gloss retention, making it ideal for long-term durability in industrial and commercial environments. This product is suitable for use on properly prepared steel, concrete, masonry, primed galvanized surfaces, and aluminum.
System Components:
Steel Master™ 9500 is used as a topcoat in a multi-layer coating system. It must be applied over a compatible primer depending on the substrate. The system typically includes:
- Primer (substrate-specific, see below)
- Topcoat: 2 coats of Steel Master™ 9500
Compatible Primers by Substrate:
- Steel (Alkyd System): 1 coat Kem Bond HS Primer or Kem Kromik Universal Metal Primer
- Steel (Acrylic System): 1 coat Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Primer
- Aluminum: 1 coat DTM Wash Primer or Galvite HS
- Galvanized Steel: 1 coat DTM Wash Primer or Galvite HS
- Concrete Block: 1 coat Pro Industrial Heavy Duty Block Filler
- Concrete and Masonry: 1 coat Loxon Concrete and Masonry Primer
Applications:
Steel Master™ 9500 is recommended for use on:
- Structural steel
- Machinery
- Piping and tanks
- Buildings and bar joists
- Signage and logo/identification enamel
- Interior and exterior surfaces in USDA-inspected facilities
Application Details:
- Application Methods: Airless spray, conventional spray, brush, or roller
- Recommended Wet Film Thickness (WFT): 3.5–5.0 mils
- Recommended Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 2.2–3.2 mils
- Coverage: 320–466 sq. ft. per gallon per coat (theoretical coverage at 1 mil DFT is 1026 sq. ft./gal)
- Mixing: Minimum 5 minutes on a mechanical shaker; ensure uniform consistency before use
- Stripe Coating: Required for welds, crevices, and sharp angles
- Spray Overlap: 50% overlap recommended to avoid holidays and pinholes
- Brush/Roller Application: May require multiple coats for uniform appearance and film build
Environmental and Application Conditions:
- Temperature Range: Minimum 45°F (7°C), maximum 100°F (38°C); surface, air, and material must be at least 5°F above dew point
- Relative Humidity: Maximum 85%
- Not UV Stable: While it offers good gloss and color retention, it is not classified as UV stable or UV resistant
- VOC Content: 307 g/L (2.56 lbs/gal)
- Flash Point: 112°F PMCC
- Shelf Life: 24–36 months unopened, depending on base color
Pot Life, Curing, and Recoat Times (at 4.0 mils WFT, 50% RH):
- Touch Dry: 1–5 hours (depending on temperature)
- Handle Time: 8 hours to 2.5 days
- Recoat Time: 8 hours to 2.5 days
- Full Cure: 3 to 30 days (temperature dependent)
Special Notes:
- Do not reduce the material, as it may affect film build and performance.
- Not compliant with SCAQMD, CARB, or LEED v4 VOC/emission standards.
- Not EPD or MPI certified.
- Not recommended for use with interior-only colorants in exterior applications.
- Surface preparation is critical for performance; follow SSPC and ICRI standards for each substrate.
- For previously painted surfaces, adhesion testing is recommended after surface dulling and cleaning.
- Clean tools and equipment with compliant solvent immediately after use.
- For best results, apply in controlled conditions and avoid application in high humidity or near dew point.
Steel Master™ 9500 is a versatile and durable topcoat solution for industrial and commercial projects requiring a high-gloss, long-lasting finish on metal and masonry substrates. When used with the appropriate primer, it forms a complete protective system suitable for a wide range of environments.
