Description
Viper VaporCheck is a cross-woven under-slab vapor barrier featuring enhanced puncture and tear strength.
UNITS PER SKID:
10 mils - 25
16 mils - 20
Material Use:
Viper VaporCheck 16-mil is a high-performance, cross-woven, reinforced polyethylene vapor barrier designed for under-slab applications. It is used to prevent moisture migration through concrete slabs-on-grade, thereby protecting interior finishes, flooring systems, and moisture-sensitive furnishings. It also serves as a barrier against radon, methane, and other soil gases, and helps control condensation, mold, and mildew within the building envelope.
System Components:
Viper VaporCheck 16-mil is part of a complete vapor barrier system that includes the following accessories for proper installation and sealing:
- Viper Vapor Tape
- Viper Double Bond Tape
- Viper VaporPatch
- VaporCheck Mastic
These components are used together to create a monolithic, sealed membrane that maintains the integrity of the vapor barrier system, especially at seams, penetrations, and terminations.
Applications:
This vapor barrier is suitable for commercial, industrial, and residential construction projects where a high-strength, low-permeance under-slab vapor retarder is required. It is ideal for use beneath concrete slabs-on-grade in environments where moisture control is critical, such as in buildings with moisture-sensitive flooring systems or where soil gases like radon and methane are a concern.
Application Details:
- Installation Surface: Place directly over a leveled and compacted granular base as specified in architectural or structural drawings.
- Placement: Unroll with the longest dimension parallel to the direction of the concrete pour. Extend over footings and seal to foundation walls or grade beams.
- Seams and Penetrations: Overlap seams by a minimum of 6 inches and seal with Viper Vapor Tape or Viper Double Bond Tape. Seal all penetrations (e.g., pipes, columns) using Viper VaporPatch, VaporCheck Mastic, or a combination of system components.
- Protection: Avoid punctures during installation of rebar and utilities. Use bar supports directly on the membrane and avoid driving stakes through the barrier. If penetrated, repair with appropriate sealing materials.
- Cushion Layer: If a cushion or blotter layer is required, use washed rock to minimize damage.
Special Notes:
- Thickness: 16 mil nominal
- Roll Size: 12 ft x 200 ft (2,400 ft² per roll)
- Weight: Approximately 130 lbs per roll
- Water Vapor Permeance: 0.0015 perms (ASTM E 96 / E 154)
- Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR): 0.00055 grains/(ft²·hr)
- Puncture Resistance: Up to 25,335 grams (ASTM D 1709), 123 lbs (ASTM D 5602)
- Tensile Strength: 167 lbf/in (MD), 158 lbf/in (TD)
- Operating Temperature Range: -70°F to 180°F
- UV Resistance: Not UV stable; intended for sub-slab use only and should be protected from prolonged UV exposure.
- Chemical Resistance: Unaffected by alkali salts, sulfates, and petroleum-contaminated soils (ASTM E 154)
- Life Expectancy: Indefinite when installed below slab and protected from UV and mechanical damage
- Maintenance: None required after installation
Viper VaporCheck 16-mil exceeds ASTM E 1745 “Class A” requirements and is compliant with multiple ASTM standards including E 154, D 1709, D 5602, and E 96. It is a reliable and durable solution for long-term moisture and soil gas control in slab-on-grade construction.
