Description
Formulated for direct application to pre-finished metal siding, Bond-Plex® Water Based Acrylic Coating is suitable for interior or exterior use.
Material Use:
Bond-Plex® is a single-component, waterborne acrylic coating designed to promote adhesion on hard, slick, and glossy surfaces such as pre-finished metal siding. It is suitable for both interior and exterior applications and eliminates the need for a separate bonding primer on certain substrates. This coating is ideal for use in light industrial environments, manufacturing facilities, and new construction projects, and is approved for use in USDA-inspected facilities.
System Components:
Bond-Plex® is typically used as a base or bonding coat in a multi-layer coating system. It can be used alone or followed by one or two coats of an acceptable topcoat. The system may include:
- 1–2 coats of Bond-Plex® Waterbased Acrylic Coating
- 1–2 coats of an acceptable topcoat such as:
- Pro Industrial Acrylic
- Pro Industrial DTM Primer/Finish
- Pro Industrial Multi-Surface Acrylic
- Pro Industrial Waterbased Acrolon 100
- Pro Industrial Waterbased Alkyd Urethane Enamel
- Pro Industrial Pre-Catalyzed Waterbased Urethane
Applications:
Bond-Plex® is specifically formulated for direct application to:
- Pre-finished siding including fluorocarbons (Kynar®), polyester polymers, and silicone polyesters
- Previously painted, hard, slick, or glossy surfaces
Application Details:
- Application Methods: Airless spray, conventional spray, brush, or roller (small surfaces only)
- Recommended Wet Film Thickness: 5.0–10.0 mils
- Recommended Dry Film Thickness: 2.4–4.1 mils
- Coverage: 160–328 sq. ft. per gallon depending on color and application method
- Theoretical Coverage: 657 sq. ft. per gallon at 1 mil dry film thickness
- Pot Life: Not applicable (single-component)
- Drying Times at 5.0 mils wet, 50% RH:
- Touch: 45 minutes @ 77°F
- Tack-Free: 4 hours @ 77°F
- Recoat: 4 hours @ 77°F
- Full Cure: Allow 16–24 hours of dry time to avoid exposure to rain, dew, or high humidity
- Application Temperature Range: Minimum 50°F (10°C), Maximum 120°F (49°C)
- Relative Humidity Limit: Maximum 85%
- Clean-up: Soap and warm water; flush spray equipment with compliant solvent
Special Notes:
- Bond-Plex® is not UV-stable as a standalone finish and should be topcoated with a UV-resistant product for exterior durability.
- Aluminum base (B71S00200) should not be tinted.
- Tinting is allowed only with CCE colorants: Extra White (0–4 oz/gal), Deep Base (10–12 oz/gal).
- Surface preparation is critical: clean per SSPC-SP1 or NACE RP-01-72. Glossy surfaces must be dulled, and all contaminants removed.
- For mildew removal, use a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 3 parts water), rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry before application.
- The coating is sensitive to moisture during early curing; avoid exposure to rain or condensation for at least 16–24 hours.
- Shelf Life: 36 months unopened (12 months for Aluminum base)
- VOC Content: <50 g/L for Extra White and Clear Tint Base; 102 g/L for Aluminum
- Performance Highlights:
- Excellent adhesion (ASTM D4541: 1477 psi)
- High impact resistance (>176 in-lbs)
- Good corrosion and humidity resistance (ASTM D5894, D4585)
- Dry heat resistance up to 200°F (93°C)
- Flexibility: Passes 180° bend on ¼" mandrel
Bond-Plex® is a versatile bonding primer and base coat that can be integrated into a variety of coating systems for metal siding and other difficult-to-coat surfaces. It is best used in combination with Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial topcoats for optimal performance and durability in both interior and exterior environments.
