Description
Loxon Concrete & Masonry Primer is perfect for sealing and conditioning porous above-grade masonry surfaces. This primer and sealer tolerates the high pH common in new masonry and ensures a uniform look and long-lasting finish.
Material Use
Loxon Concrete and Masonry Primer-Sealer is an acrylic coating engineered for interior and exterior above-grade masonry surfaces. It is primarily used as a high-performance primer to seal and prepare porous masonry substrates before topcoating, ensuring durability and resistance to alkali and efflorescence.
System Components
This primer is designed to be part of a system and must be used in conjunction with appropriate topcoats. Recommended topcoat systems include:
- Architectural Topcoats:
- A-100 Exterior Latex
- Duration Exterior & Duration Home Interior
- Emerald Exterior & Interior
- Loxon Masonry Coatings
- SuperPaint Exterior & Interior
- ProClassic Interior
- ProMar Interior
- Industrial Topcoats (for architectural use only):
- Industrial Enamels
- Pro Industrial Series
- Water-Based Catalyzed Epoxy
Base Coat: Loxon Concrete and Masonry Primer
Final Coat: Two coats of the specified topcoat (see above)
For porous block surfaces, a coat of Loxon Acrylic Block Surfacer is required before the primer to ensure a pinhole-free finish.
Applications
This primer is suitable for:
- Concrete, Concrete Block
- Brick, Stucco, EIFS
- Fiber Cement Siding
- Plaster, Mortar
- Exterior Wall Cladding
- Tilt-Up/Pre-Cast Concrete
Surfaces must be above grade and cured for a minimum of 7 days prior to application.
Application Details
- Surface Preparation: All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants. Repair all cracks and voids with appropriate patching compounds or sealants.
- Application Methods:
- Airless Spray: 2000–2700 psi, 0.019 inch tip
- Brush: Nylon-polyester
- Roller: ½ to 1½ inch nap synthetic cover
- Temperature Range: Minimum 40°F; air and surface must remain above 40°F for 48 hours post-application.
- Humidity: Avoid rain/snow within 4–6 hours of application. Surfaces must be dry; damp surfaces are acceptable, but not wet.
- Tinting: Can be tinted with up to 4 oz. per gallon of ColorCast Ecotoners for color matching.
Material Limitations and Curing
- Pot Life: Not explicitly defined (as it is a single-component acrylic primer).
- Drying Time @ 77°F / 50% RH:
- To Touch: 4 hours
- To Recoat: 24 hours
- Topcoat Window: Must be topcoated within 14 days for exterior use to prevent weathering degradation.
- Cure Dependency: Times vary with temperature, humidity, and film thickness.
Coverage and Thickness
- Regular Coverage:
- Wet Mils: 5.3–8.0
- Dry Mils: 2.1–3.2
- Coverage Rate: 200–320 sq. ft./gallon
- Porous/Rough Stucco: ~80 sq. ft./gallon
- Thin-Mil (New Tilt-Up/Precast):
- Wet Mils: 2.7–4.0
- Dry Mils: 1.1–1.6
- Coverage Rate: 400–600 sq. ft./gallon
Special Notes
- VOC Content: <50 g/L (0.42 lbs/gal), compliant with multiple environmental standards including LEED v4/v4.1.
- UV Resistance: Not explicitly stated; must be topcoated for exterior durability.
- Shelf Life: 36 months unopened.
- Certifications: EPD-NSF Certified, MIR-Product Lens Certified, MPI compliant.
- Water Vapor Permeance: 25.79 perms – allows breathability.
- Alkali & Efflorescence Resistance: Passes ASTM tests.
- Surface Must Be Cured: Concrete and mortar to be cured at least 7 days at 75°F with moisture content ≤15%.
