Metalastic DTM Enamel is a high-build acrylic modified enamel with rust-inhibitive properties for application directly to bare steel. Provides an economical alternative to many maintenance and new construction projects.
Material Use:
Metalastic® DTM is a high-build, acrylic-modified enamel designed for direct-to-metal (DTM) applications. It offers rust-inhibitive properties and serves as both a primer and finish coat in one product. This material is ideal for maintenance and new construction projects where corrosion resistance and aesthetic finish are required. It is suitable for both interior and exterior use and is USDA-compliant for use in inspected facilities.
System Components:
Metalastic® DTM can be used as a standalone system or in combination with specific primers depending on the substrate and service conditions. For light service, a single coat of Metalastic DTM is sufficient. For moderate service, two coats are recommended. When used with primers, the following systems are suggested:
- Steel (Alkyd Primer System): 1 coat Kem Bond HS Primer or Kem Kromik Universal Metal Primer + 1–2 coats Metalastic DTM
- Steel (Acrylic Primer System): 1 coat Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Primer + 1–2 coats Metalastic DTM
- Aluminum & Galvanized Steel: 1 coat Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Primer + 1–2 coats Metalastic DTM
- Concrete, Masonry, Wood, and Drywall: Require appropriate surface preparation and priming before application of Metalastic DTM.

- Application Methods: Airless spray, conventional spray, brush, or roller
- Recommended Wet Film Thickness (WFT): 5.0–8.0 mils
- Recommended Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 3.1–4.9 mils
- Coverage: 202–320 sq. ft. per gallon per coat (based on WFT); theoretical coverage at 1 mil DFT is 994 sq. ft./gal
- Pot Life: Not specified (single-component product)
- Drying Times at 7.0 mils WFT, 50% RH:
- Touch: 3 hours @ 40°F / 3 hours @ 77°F / 45 minutes @ 120°F
- Handle: 10 hours @ 40°F / 6 hours @ 77°F / 1 hour @ 120°F
- Recoat: 36 hours @ 40°F / 18 hours @ 77°F / 6 hours @ 120°F
- Full Cure: 14 days @ 40°F / 7 days @ 77°F / 7 days @ 120°F
- Temperature Range for Application: Minimum 40°F (4.4°C), Maximum 120°F (49°C); must be at least 5°F above dew point
- Relative Humidity Limit: Maximum 85%

Special Notes:
- Metalastic DTM is not UV-rated; however, it offers good gloss and color retention for exterior use.
- Excessive reduction or application outside the recommended film thickness may compromise performance.
- Surface preparation is critical for optimal adhesion and performance. For steel, SSPC-SP6/NACE 3 commercial blast cleaning is recommended.
- For aluminum and galvanized surfaces, Pro-Cryl Primer is required.
- For concrete and masonry, surface preparation per SSPC-SP13/NACE 6 or ICRI CSP 1–3 is required, and a primer such as Loxon Conditioner may be necessary.
- Not compliant with SCAQMD, CARB, or LEED v4 VOC/emission standards.
- Clean tools and equipment with compliant solvents. Dispose of rags and waste materials properly to avoid fire hazards.
- Always test adhesion on previously painted surfaces and ensure proper surface preparation.
- Do not use interior-only colorants.
This product is best suited for industrial and commercial applications where a durable, corrosion-resistant, and aesthetically pleasing finish is required on metal substrates. It simplifies coating systems by combining primer and finish in one, reducing labor and material costs.
