Description

Designed for both construction and maintenance applications, Pro Industrial™ Pro-Cryl® Universal Acrylic Primer is a rust-inhibitive primer to use under water-based or solvent-based high-performance topcoats.

Material Use:

Pro Industrial™ Pro-Cryl® Universal Primer is a high-performance, single-component, self-cross-linking acrylic primer designed for both new construction and maintenance applications. It is rust-inhibitive and corrosion-resistant, making it ideal for use on steel, galvanized metal, aluminum, and wood surfaces. This primer is suitable for both interior and exterior environments and is compatible with a wide range of water-based and solvent-based topcoats.

System Components:

This primer is typically used as the base coat in a multi-layer coating system. It must be topcoated for optimal performance, especially in exterior applications. Acceptable topcoats include:

- Water-Based Topcoats:

- Pro Industrial Acrylic Coating

- Pro Industrial Acrylic Dryfall

- Pro Industrial DTM Acrylic

- Pro Industrial Multi-Surface Acrylic

- Pro Industrial Pre-Catalyzed Epoxy

- Pro Industrial Pre-Catalyzed Urethane

- Pro Industrial Water Based Acrolon 100

- Pro Industrial Water Based Alkyd Urethane

- Pro Industrial Water Based Catalyzed Epoxy

- Sherwin-Williams Architectural Coatings

- Solvent-Based Topcoats:

- Pro Industrial High Performance Epoxy

- Pro Industrial Industrial Enamels

- Tile Clad HS Epoxy

Applications:

Pro-Cryl® Universal Primer is suitable for use on properly prepared steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, and wood substrates. It is ideal for commercial, industrial, and institutional environments, including USDA-inspected facilities. It can be used in both interior and exterior applications where corrosion resistance and adhesion are critical.

Application Details:

- Surface Preparation:

- Steel: Minimum SSPC-SP2 (Hand Tool Cleaning); for best results, SSPC-SP6 (Commercial Blast Cleaning)

- Aluminum: Clean per SSPC-SP1

- Galvanized Steel: Weather for 6 months or clean per SSPC-SP1; test patch recommended

- Wood: Clean, dry, and sound; spot prime knots and pitch streaks

- Previously Painted Surfaces: Clean and abrade glossy surfaces; test adhesion before full application

- Application Methods:

- Airless Spray: 2000 psi, 0.015–0.019" tip, 60 mesh filter

- Conventional Spray: Binks 95 gun, 66 fluid nozzle, 63PB air nozzle

- Brush: Nylon-polyester

- Roller: 3/8" woven cover

- Reducer: Water (up to 5% if needed)

- Film Thickness & Coverage:

- Wet Film Thickness: 5.0–10.0 mils

- Dry Film Thickness: 1.9–3.8 mils

- Coverage: 160–320 sq. ft. per gallon

- Theoretical Coverage: 609 sq. ft. per gallon @ 1 mil dry

- Drying Times @ 6.0 mils wet, 50% RH:

- 40°F: Touch – 2 hrs, Recoat – 16 hrs

- 77°F: Touch – 40 min, Recoat – 4 hrs

- 120°F: Touch – 20 min, Recoat – 2 hrs

- Full cure time is not explicitly stated but recoat times suggest readiness for topcoat within hours depending on temperature.

- Environmental Conditions:

- Application Temperature: 35°F (1.6°C) minimum, 120°F (48.8°C) maximum

- Relative Humidity: Maximum 85%

- Surface must be at least 5°F above dew point

- Do not apply immediately after rain or during foggy weather

Special Notes:

- This primer is not UV stable on its own and must be topcoated for exterior durability.

- For best results on rusty surfaces, apply the first coat by brush to ensure penetration and adhesion.

- For exterior applications, topcoat within 14 days to avoid surface contamination. If this window is exceeded, clean thoroughly before topcoating.

- Do not tint this primer.

- VOC content is less than 50 g/L, making it compliant with LEED® v4 & v4.1 and other environmental standards.

- Shelf life is 36 months unopened.

- Clean tools and equipment with soap and warm water immediately after use.

System Compatibility:

Pro Industrial™ Pro-Cryl® Universal Primer is designed to work as a base coat in a system with a wide range of Sherwin-Williams topcoats, both water-based and solvent-based. It is especially effective when paired with Pro Industrial Acrylic Coating or Pro Industrial High Performance Epoxy for high-durability applications. This makes it a versatile primer for use in systems requiring corrosion resistance, fast dry times, and broad environmental compliance.
